In the grim darkness of the 1960s, at least we could put a man on the moon.

Well obviously. During the Biometal wars with the CCA the moon was the staging point out into the rest of the solar system. Some really gruesome battles were fought there.

Cordite or black powder?

Gecko Gingrich: Cordite or black powder?

Smokeless, obviously.   Most astronauts of the time wouldn't have known what burnt black powder smells like, and they describe the smell as acrid, which accurately describes the smell of burnt smokeless, but not black powder which basically smells like a bad egg fart from the sulfur content.

The Sixties weren't dark.  They may have been grim, but they were also rather colorful.

If you'd been blasted by cosmic radiation for millions of years, I think you would smell burnt as well.

So the moon has a distinctive smell?  It should be pretty easy to guess what it smell like when we get to Uranus.

/low hanging fruit & all that
//the geologist hitting a rock with a hammer remark was quite good.  I instantly knew that smell from my misspent youth swinging hammers at rocks for the hell of it.

Well, there is plenty of Ammonium Hydrosulfide on Uranus, so yeah, probably does.

I'm curious to know... are we allowed to mention the infamous Bond girl played by Honor Blackman any more?

Um...wouldn't the astronauts have been smelling whatever the air in their life-support systems smelled like?

I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that it may incriminate me.

Um, they'd been smelling it for three days before they got to the Moon, I think they'd notice something new.

qorkfiend: Um...wouldn't the astronauts have been smelling whatever the air in their life-support systems smelled like?

There was no airlock in the lander. They had to suit up pump the air out, and open the door. Then un-suit and pump the air back in when they got back inside. So the inside of the lander smelled like whatever the outside smelled like too.

Moon dust is a very pervasive contaminant which is nigh to impossible to clean completely from your space suit before reentering the space craft.

On the first trip out, probably.
Lunar dust is described as very sharp and sticky tho, like powdered glass. So every trip outside would bring alot of it back into the capsule.

/Probably wasn't a healthy situation. Could irritate skin or cause breathing problems.
/If someone was to stay there long term, they'd have to prevent this from happening.
