I don't think they should have taken the sign down.  So she's offended.  Someone is always going to be offended about something.

The most offensive thing was the comments in the TFA.

If we took down every sign somebody didn't like, we wouldn't have any signs up.

2014-08-25 08:40:18 AM
They say they've reached out to the individual who made the post and proactively took the sign down.

Know why so many Muslims move to Winooski?
Because it reminds them of whatever third world country they ran away from.

Me? I'm offended by people that insist on forcing their fairy tales upon people with logical sensibilities.

They could also be approaching this from a business thinking posture, not an individual posture. Meaning, they took down the sign because, hey customers! Although people who are offended by the mere mention of bacon probably wouldn't eat anywhere near there anyway.

I'm both fascinated and scared. These people are farked up. I personally enjoy the guy advocating "eliminating the muslims" and then pivoting when asked what he means by "eliminate"

I like what Stephen Fry had to say about people saying they're offended:

"It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more--it's simply a whine. It's no more than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so f*cking what."

So a business owner made a decision to remove the sign on his own, and this has all the good fake libertarians up in arms? Well... ok then. That happened.

Muslims will adapt quickly to our all American tradition of  phony umbrage-based religious brow beating.

They may have erred in choosing bacon as an opponent though.

"The cool part of living in a diverse community is that it's not always comfortable. It's a fascinating place with lots of opportunities for conversation. The City has to pay attention to a lot of factors while acting within what we can regulate..."

Local government regulating things is really cool. Especially if you're white, male and have money.

Meh, it's your right to be "offended" by anything you want -- and it's my right to ignore you.  If it's a common reaction (because the ad in question really is offensive to a large number of people), then it might have business repercussions, but there is not right for an individual to be free from offense.

Reducing all speech to the lowest common denominator is not a Good Thing.

The breakfast chef is a pal of mine.
They make damned good food, too.
Sure, the name has a certain dated hipster quality to it.
But there is a farking line out the door for brunch on weekends, and that speaks volumes.

As stupid as I think the complaint was, if the headline had read "diner owner refused to take down sign offensive to muslims" 3/4s of the state of Vermont would have boycotted the place.  But that's not really the point.

This ain't Texas. We don't do things solely to piss people off. Sometimes we take another person's feelings into account just because we're polite.

Some things are worth fighting for, other things are not. Bacon? Meh...

2014-08-25 12:06:09 PM
If I could afford it, I would pay a crop duster to fly over this woman's house spraying aerosolyzed bacon, just to watch her head asplode from outrage. I would hold a nice smoky, odoriferous BBQ in the yard next door. I would scatter pork rinds like juju dust across the sidewalk. I would toss a football in the street out front.

So maybe a compromise is in order.  Apologize to the complainer in question, remove the photo of bacon, and replace the ad with a photo of ham.
