What a clever use of a captive audience of powerful people to force out an important message.

Ehrm... I mean... shes just doing it for the attention. BOOOO!

A Rolling Stone article about the VMAs. . . Could we get a link of the. . . I can't really think of a good analogy for an obsolete rag publishing a report on a medium that doesn't broadcast that which its name infers that it does.

Wow. She just went purple on the attention whoring scale.

Gee, I'm sorry I missed that. I guess I could google it, but I have all these walnuts to crack. And then there's the Sasskatoon berries that need picking. And the buiscutsthatneed.......

I think that was an awesome thing to do.  Why the hate?

She's just trying to get attention in order to sell records and concert tickets so that she can make money.  Has she no shame!?

I hate her because she's beautiful.

Yes, it was such an original and thought provoking thing to do by a music act.

No, it was an over-the-top attention-whoring thing to do.

You must have missed the shots where she was sitting on the railing actively trying to make herself cry.

It's a sad world where people buy into it, but then again, that's why people like her are famous.

/there's one born every minute

A great question. I think people "hate" her because reasons and because "stop liking what I don't like".
I didn't see what actually happened, from what I read I thought that was a cool thing to do.

Brick-House: Good for her and I for one would love to do her. I'll bet that she's an incredibly fun fu*k as well as bing a bit freaky. So no hate here.

And yes, agreed with Brick-House, I would totally wreck that chick.

Exactly.  This will be the first, and probably last, time I hear about how much Miley Cyrus cares about the homeless.  If she were a tireless and advocate on this subject, I might find it commendable.  But she isn't.  This is grandstanding and God help us all if this becomes a contest of "trotting out our own pet tragic person", it'll be  like a pig party, but for the self righteous.

Standards and the VMAs (or for that matter, any MTV awards show) became mutually exclusive years ago. Decades, even, but I'd need to study that a bit more.

Anyway, good on her. Yeah, she can try too hard, but she still seems more genuine than others.

She then turned around and challenged three other celebrities to do the same at the next award show, or donate $100 to a homeless shelter of their choice.

Depends.  How much of it is runaways trying to escape from an actually bad situation (i.e. not the rare affluenza induced runaways), and how many are kicked out of the house?

I had a not so CSB her about my sister in law getting kicked out because she got blamed for thefts perpetrated by her step-father's sister, but decided no one really cares, so I snipped it.

2014-08-25 02:48:53 PM
My Friend's Place has been around for many years and does good work.  Hollywood has always drawn runaways and they are often exploited.  Even if this was a cynical ploy by Miley's "people" it is a good thing.

I figure it's good to give her attention for doing something classy. She didn't even go up there with him to avoid distracting from his message. I know you're being tongue-in-cheek about the second part of your post, but I would like to provide her with positive reinforcement for doing something with grace.

Here's how your behavior comes into play:

If a behavior is positively reinforced, it is more likely to occur again. She is young. How many years had she had to be a tireless advocate of anything? But, by all means, behave in a way that makes it less likely that she will do good in the future. That will make the world a better place.

Why not both? Still, it was a good move. And at least she didn't send a fake Indian.

Oops. I was wrong. I remember it being reported she wasn't a real Indian because her real name was Maria Cruz, and she took the name Sacheen Littlefeather around the time she became and actress. She was an actress. She did change her name to Sacheen Littlefeather. But she was also really Native American. IMDB also listed her as a fake Indian for a while, but that has been changed. Other sources reported that she was a Mexican actress. She's not. But, even if she were, most of the people we call Mexican in the Southwest are actually Native American.

Thanks for calling me on this. I would hate to continue perpetuating an injustice against this woman.

She seems serious about doing whatever it takes to kill, kill kill Hannah Montana and prove she's a real grownup who thinks serious grownup thoughts a lot.

I suppose next she'll start adopting enough third-world orphans to field a baseball team.

Katy Perry should consider doing something similar. She's almost 30 years old and still targets the tween set.

I didn't really think the video was all that good given some of the other videos that came out this year. The move on her part just feels like high jacking the event. Good message though.

2014-08-25 05:19:58 PM
There are plenty of things she can do to help without highjacking or drawing attention to herself.

If it was discovered she'd been working soup kitchens undercover for the past year and word got out, that'd be commendable.

This is her transforming her attention whoring from tweaking on stage to philanthropy.

Again, she has plenty of ways to help the homeless, it's just too convenient that she chooses the maximum exposure angle every time.

I didn't know where you got the notion that the girl who did a simulated sex dance with Robin Thick on national television would become a shrinking violet over criticism about this particular event.  I am not the least bit concerned.

Maybe she can bring a leper on stage for the next awards ceremony.

Hoo boy...This girl can't catch a break on fark to save her life.

If she did this in her Hannah Montana days the world would give a collective, "AAAAwwwwwww".

Guys,

Life isn't about actions.  Its about results.

It doesn't matter if it was attention whoring or not.
It doesn't matter if the crying was real or not.

What matters is a great organization got some major exposure and probably a significant amount of donations.

It wouldn't hurt you to just once let go of the hatred and think, "Good Job Miley!"
Try it! Letting go of hatred can feel pretty good.

A case could be made to call the ALS ice bucket challenges, "attention whoring" also, but you don't.
Why?  Because multiple celebrities are doing it.
Yet if multiple celebs brought out homeless people to get there awards, you'd put that down too, wouldn't you.

BLAST YOU SUBBY FOR MAKING ME DEFEND THIS STUPID TWUNT!

It was 1 guy not a group. It was actually kind of moving until I saw the article where Buzzfeed found his Facebook page and he's as big a twunt as Miley is.

nimawai: Considering Lorde won for Royals in the best rock album of the year I'd say Miley winning a VMA fits very well.

Which is up there with Jethro Tull winning over Metallica.  Lorde had a fine album, but it wasn't rock.  Not that MTV cares, they didn't even play video clips for the rock nominees.
