I think you're bright enough to figure out that's not the point I'm trying to make. The language used is specific and purposeful. They're not just reporting the facts. I watch and read news (Spanish) from all over the Americas, and most news outlets don't manipulate language to become commentary (unless they're government-owned) as ham-fistedly as American news. Hell, most of the time, the news is just people flat-out saying, "Our enemies are evil." And we just gobble it up. It says something that FoxNooz is the most popular TV news in the country.

We're incapable of peace or even de-escalation with any of our enemies when there is a profitable propaganda machine in place. If we want this to go away, it has to go one way or the other -- either make peace, or kill every. single. one of them. So far, we are spectacularly bad at both.

Despite the fact that nobody was killed, I'm sure its Obama's fault for not having troops on the ground rescuing him sooner, and any US deaths would be his fault for rushing to action. Why does Obama hate America?

I went looking on other news sites to find out what they traded him for.  You get very carefully worded statements like this one from the NYT:

"While the family is not privy to the exact terms that were negotiated, we were repeatedly told by representatives of the Qatari government that they were mediating for Theo's release on a humanitarian basis without the payment of money," Mrs. Curtis said.

You would almost think from reading this that he did not get traded for money.

I'm surprised you caught so much flack from other posters for something so obvious.  The fact that impartial language in news is so foreign to most people is a worrying indication.  I don't care how obviously evil one side is, editorializing basic news adds nothing and is a dangerous precedent to set for topics that are less clear.

Al Nusrah doesn't crucify or indiscriminately behead AFAIK. They were originally aligned with ISIS, but when ISIS went full "be as brutal as you can to anyone who disagrees with our viewpoint", Al Qaeda told them to knock it off, and Al Nusrah stopped the alliance. They are still assholes, but they aren't as bad as ISIS by any stretch

Please stop saying "we" when you shiat all over everyone else for imagined transgressions against the ideology you've built atop your specific and selective logic.  FOX is the most popular single television news outlet because it's the only one catering to the half of the country that leans to the right.  If CNN was the only cable and network (not local) news outlet to the left of conservatism it would be the most popular television news in the country, but unlike FOX it doesn't have that luxury.  News from abroad doesn't blatantly manipulate language?  Seriously?  Ever read the U.K. press?  German?  Brazilian?  Chinese?  French?  Not least of which when discussing the United States?  Journalism is often biased and consequently worth shiat as anything but commentary, but that you can't perceive or understand that it's happening elsewhere doesn't mean it's not.

For the record, this guy converted to Islam, took an Islamic name, and wrote books which attempt to open peoples minds to Islam,   priorto being kidnapped.

So... while its awesome that he was released, its likely that the Qatar people who negotiated his release were like "Hey farkheads, stop holding that Muslim ransom."

No. In fact, the exact opposite is true. Even though IS, al-Qaeda and affiliated groups have always been at war with the US, it's only been in the last few months that any serious media attention has been given to the groups fighting in Iraq and Syria. That's precisely because there isn't some coordinated, super-patriotic propaganda campaign going on, and until the violence started spilling into Iraq (where the US still has a military presence), there just wasn't anything there that was interesting enough for American audiences to devote that kind of time/space to.

As for language usage by media - again, my impression is the exact opposite of yours. In my experience, media that receive public funding (such as BBC, NPR etc.) tend to be quite reserved in their reporting and it's the private networks that tend to be more creative and colourful in their phrasing.
