It's been in use for thousands of years by people of all ages. I think we're past "lab rat" stage. It's not as if taking a hit of that joint between periods is being studied by scientists, nor would it be responsible for a scientist to rely on the recollection of kids today 20 years from now to conduct their experiments.

Absolutely nothing is going to stop a certain percentage of teenagers from getting high. There is probably no way to decrease that percentage. The one sure way to INCREASE it is to spend a bunch of money telling teens not to get high.

"The premise of the campaign is that teens who use marijuana are essentially volunteering to be research subjects, to test out the effects of the drug on themselves, according to a statement from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment."

And, curiously enough, if these same lab rats hadn't been volunteering over the last few decades and finding a great many valid medical uses... people would still be brainwashed into thinking Reefer Madness was a documentary and that we're 'winning' the War on Drugs.

"Hey! I Know! We'll just tell our children benign lies!
It's for their own good, and, hey - they're kids - they won't figure it out."

So have spoken clueless old people for the last 100,000 years.

Stop lying and tell the truth. For a developing brain, any inebriating chemical is quite bad. Unless you get kids to realize that there is science behind the statement and don't go full prohibition, thereby creating the feeling of rebellion, they will usually take it to heart.

If you smoke pot you'll go insane.

No?

Ok how about this? If you smoke pot you'll eventually get addicted to heroin.

Still no?

If you smoke pot you're funding terrorism? If you smoke pot you will become sterile? If you smoke pot you'll ruin your life? If you smoke pot you'll get cancer.

Still no?

I got it.

If you smoke pot there is no way of knowing the possible horrible consequences.

Can't argue with that.

So much this. I used to get up on Saturday mornings and take a walk and come back and watch Pee wees playhouse and had a great time. Also miss the Muppet show as well.

Honestly, I tend to vastly prefer people who took up toking as fully realized adults than people who started in their early teens. It's entirely anecdotal and entirely based on my own experience, but yeah. Meet a toker who is warm and engaged and full of care and empathy, they seem to have started later. The early starters have all seemed to be the "emotionally dead inside" types.

Exactly this.  Stop thinking kids are innocent little flowers and using scare tactics to control them.  They're not that easily scared anymore.

Use facts.  They respond well to those.

I agree about telling the  truth. But there is no "truth" about pot that will push people away from it. The studies show that younger people who smoke have little to no difference in brain functionality from non smokers, and once they stop it goes back to normal. Other than the rare person with allergic reactions there are no long term negative side effects to marijuana use. So yes we should definitely tell the truth.

How many teens do you know who vape? I didn't try a vaporizer until I was in my mid 20s, and I still don't own one. Though in full disclosure, I also generally don't smoke anymore, since my body doesn't react well to pot.

There are studies which show cannabis has a reduction in lung cancer even when smoked.  Mainly because it restricts blood flow to the tumors.

Pretty sure my 24 y.o. daughter smokes, because she does it with my brother, her uncle.  She also went through HS with a 4.0, graduated on time and with honors from the university, and now has a high-salary job that she loves and which had 200 other applicants.

Add that anecdote to the anecdotal "evidence."

Teens are pricks, you tell them one thing they go out of their way to do it.  I think we'll be pleasantly surprised as the number of teens that don't do it by choice.  Once the country has legalized it entirely, that is.

Liberals: Marijuana is a natural herb that cannot harm anyone, no matter what. BAN TOBACCO. TOBACCO MAKES YOU EVIL! TOBACCO IS BEHIND ALL HEALTH PROBLEMS AND PROBABLY TURNS YOU INTO A RACIST HOMOPHOBE, TOO!

Conservatives: DEMON REEFER IS THE DEVIL'S THING! BAN IT! IT CAUSES ALL SOCIAL BREAKDOWN, ALL CRIME, AND AIDS! Tobacco must be sold freely, and its status in the free market must be respected and protected.

Ban it all or permit it all. I'm a biologist, sucking down smoke from anything over the long term will have negative health effects vs. not sucking down smoke from anything over the long term.

The real health threat comes from growers who use toxic pesticides to protect their crops.  THOSE are harmful to humans. A simple problem easily fixed with proper regulation.  They didn't even list the real side effects of the war on drugs.  SWAT teams, police using the smell of pot as an excuse to enter/search a home, jail time, children taken by child protective services, a criminal record, lowered job prospects for life.  When the effects of enforcing the drug laws are more harmful and numerous that the actual effects of the actual drug, it's time to re-evaluate.

Educate, Regulate, Tax-ate, and provide real drug rehabilitation services without the threat of criminal prosecution.
