The colored smoke bombs were very cool, but I've seen fireworks in an implosion before - they brought down a hotel tower near me about 10 years back that was filmed for a movie, so they fancied it up a bit for that. Also see the destruction of the Vegas Landmark hotel in Mars Attacks!

postnobills: Vegas Landmark hotel

I wasn't in Vegas for that, but I saw the Dunes implosion from the top of Polo Towers. The fireworks before the implosion were for Steve Coolbeck's birthday celebration.

I've occasionally wondered why pyrotechnicians (is that a word? firework shooters) don't get together with the building imploders.  They both are putting on a show for a lot of people, why not combine them & really make it a good show.

/if you're blowing up the damn thing anyway, who cares if there is damage to the inside of the building
//just have to be sure that the fireworks don't interfere with the actual demo charges

That's where your demolition insurance skyrockets. When you've got det cord and shaped charges spread all over the place, sequenced to go off in a critical timed pattern, the last thing you want is a bunch of concussion waves and burning magnesium pellets flying around. If the pyrotechnics set off some of the demolition charges early, or knock them loose from their structural load targets, or cut the fuse, the building doesn't land where it's supposed to.

Reminds me of the controlled demolition of the Towers.

My favorite implosions are the ones where bits of debris hit spectators.  And that one where Top Gear put a Toyota on top of a building before they blew it up.

How much more did that cost taxpayers instead of skipping the eye candy and just doing it the normal way?

Of all the days to be gone taking my kid back to college.  Waaah.  Nice camera work--no wrong side up phone crap.

Since when do taxpayers pay for demolotion of private property so that private propterty developers can build new buildings on said private property?

You can tell they intended to spell out something with the colored smoke but there was too much other smoke in the way of the new smoke.

I got the "J+J" from the first round of fireworks, but couldn't get anything else.  The demo was done by CDI, so it's not a reference to the company.  *shrug*

I liked the countdown right before the takedown shots.... somewhat obscured by the smoke, but at one second intervals, with the 1 on the right side of the building just before the actual implosion.....

Yep, that must have been what they were going for...  Too bad they failed miserably.......  Why do that puff of white smoke all over before the countdown and why have such a long delay after the 1.......................

Having been on Fark for a while, I know that feeding the trolls is considered bad form...  maybe you should go back to the politics tab....  I live with my mom on that one.

A lot more of Albany needs to be imploded.

They pay engineers lots of money to figure out how to take down buildings using the least amount of explosives, and make sure they land in a safe place. These guys plan for months. They determine the exact placement of each charge. They painstakingly calculate the exact size of each charge. I will cut that cost in half by simply eliminating the math. Planning? That's for commies. I'll just fill the basement with C-4. Y'all might want to take a few steps back, though.
