At least that's what we are telling grampa, though it's really because he's old, and our blubber reserves are dangerously low.

If he was any sort of a man he'd go down with it.

And people will buy this hook line and sinker, not realizing that icebergs melt anyway regardless of GCCTM.

Correct me if I am wrong, but ice berg on the ocean,,,
This is about sea change isn't it?
Attention should be directed to the water on a water world IMHO.

As we all likely know, icebergs flip over unpredictably, so I'd like to see him try to do this.

... how does being able to live an a giant piece of ice raise awareness for the world getting warming? Wouldn't it make more sense to live at a place that used to be covered with ice, but is now great farmland? I would think saying "look, there are giant ice cubes in the ocean you can live on!" would have the opposite effect of what he's attempting?

Why do deniers think it is a big deal that a ship gets stuck in ice at the Antarctic?

It is hardly rare or unexpected and there is nothing about global warming suggest that events like this will not happen.

I suspect it is their endless inability to separate climate from weather.

2014-08-24 12:34:47 PM
The project will also serve science: the UK-based explorer plans to observe the changes to our planetary climate, firsthand.

Climatologists have gone to considerable effort to distinguish between the long term, general effects of climate and the short-term to seasonal, localized effects of weather.
Then these two butt monkeys, Bellini and Mok, undermine them to play the 'symbolic card'.

jesus...the f*cking hubris....

This asshole is going to sh*t, piss and litter in a pristine place to prove he loves the planet more than anyone else? 365 days of garbage and supplies? Fantastic!

Icebergs flip, calve chunks of ice and generally disintegrate. Attempting to live on one is weapons grade stupid on the scale of living under a teetering serac on a glacier.

If he actually survives chalk it up as a failed suicide attempt.....

I disagree. I think living on an iceberg is a smashing idea for this chap. He should bring along a whole team of like-minded thinkers.

The people that doubt are intractable. They are either incapable of or unwilling to differentiate real science from junk science.

What is important now is to keep reminding reasonable people how important this is.

I'm not a fan of stunts like this, but if this is what it takes to get some people to pay attention, I guess it is a necessary evil.

Maybe 30 or 40 years ago, this would have been relevant, but today, with our technology flooding us with every kook, nutcase, eccentric, cause and just stupid ideas, not that many folks will give a shiat.

Besides, we've been hit with so many 'you're gonna destroy the world' warnings which many nations tend to ignore for financial reasons, that a lot of folks don't care.

Look at the popular reality TV series GoldRush. The crews destroy thousands of acres of forested land to get a few ounces of gold and this is acceptable. The ongoing squabble over burning coal for energy hasn't stopped companies from leveling mountains to get it and users dumping tons of pollutants into the air.

Biofuel from used cooking oil was supposed to provide us with cheaper fuel while eliminating waste. Big Business got involved and the free component -- cooking oil -- is now bought and sold and the end product, bio-diesel isn't that much cheaper than regular diesel.
During the Great Gas Shortage, high mpg cars were made for a time, then out came gas guzzling SUVs that people rushed to buy while our own banks, knowing we were struggling with increased costs, invested in crude, keeping fuel expenses high.

While we're worried by Global Warming, various Middle Eastern Nations have decided to go to war over almost anything -- with their explosives and military gear generating far more atmospheric pollutants in days than their countries would have done, at peace, in decades.

So, with everything else going on, this guy is essentially a grain of sand in a sandstorm of problems.

Well said. But without perspective many of us think that it's a lot worse than in the past. Relatively it's always been the same. Not to downplay the pain and suffering, lives lost by the common people to extremists in all these conflicts or the damage big businesses are allowed to get away with to the planet. So what do we do? I'm considering the only way anything changes is mass enlightenment but we'll see... ;)

Look the only way to stop Man Made Global Warming is to kill off a very large chuck of the population.

Therefore I challenge all believers in Man Made Global Warming to lead the way and kill themselves.

Show us you really believe in saving the Earth.

P.S. Be sure to leave a note (that way we know you did not do it to save the whales or something else.)

You and other members of the anti-science crowd are the only people suggesting this solution. So you can go ahead and demonstrate its effectiveness on yourselves.

The rest of us are only considering solutions that reduce pollution, reduced dependence on middle-east oil and, preferably, generate new industries to help our economies.

He's not going to get attention this way. What he needs to do is challenge other people to live on a melting iceberg for a year as well, or donate X amount to [Global Warming Charity].
