In the bad old days, it was 3 years after it aired before I could catch a rerun of that episode. I missed it, and it seemed to rarely show up, and when it did, some calamity would prevent me seeing it.

I never did become a Supreme Court Justice though.

The Shirley Jones and Marty Ingalls New Year's Eve party? I love these references that were old in 1996 & seem ancient now.

I called my satellite provider and added the package for FXX specifically for this marathon... Unfortunately, it was late Thursday night so I missed out on some of the better episodes of season 2, like "One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish".

We have over 100 episodes recorded on our DVR now.

Watched Itchy & Scratchy Land last night (among others) and definitely know that I can't show these to my kids!

Marge: I hope you realize now that violence on TV may be funny, but it's not so funny when that violence is happening to you.
Bart: But it would be funny to someone who was watching us.
Marge: Hmm...
Lisa: No, Mom, he's right. [takes off her shoe] Observe. [throws it at Bart]
[Marge laughs involuntarily; Lisa and Bart laugh too]
Marge: Oh, my! Lisa, go to your room.
Lisa: Aw.

I remember back in the day when moms across America were horrified by Bart Simpson & how he was going to corrupt the children.

My central memory of these seasons seems to hang on one or five or maybe forty episodes-or very early reruns-when I left the couch half-crazy and, instead of going to bed, aimed the big tube TV across the grainy recorded episodes on my VCR at a hundred channels an hour wearing Krusty shorts and a "Don't have a cow, man" t-shirt . . . The writers could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever they were doing was right, that we were winning. . . .

And that, I think, was the handle-that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of reality TV and laugh tracks.  Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our comedy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting-on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. . . .

So now, these years later, you can go on FXX and look at the old seasons, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark-that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

Caught the Itchy and Scratchy Land episode, Sideshow Bob Roberts episode, and the Who Shot Mr. Burns? episodes. I was a kid when they were new; it was nice to revisit it.

You know what I notice about the old episodes? They have a kind of breakneck speed. Boom-boom-boom-boom. Dialogue to visual gag to dialogue to witty statement to dialogue to visual gag. There are things going on in the background. It's unfocused, but in a good way. There's no pause in the action (and, if there is, it's for said visual gags), and it's like the writers were throwing everything at us. It was a whirlwind of humor and wit.

I can understand the rancor for the show as it is now. In modern episodes, it's slow. More than that, it feels slow. And, as such, the show damn near holds the viewer's hand and beats the viewer over the head with what's happening. The last few seasons haven't been bad, but it doesn't feel like this classic Simpsons chaos, and it doesn't have that raw, unpolished, frenzied charm. I guess that's what happens when you focus on appealing to everyone--you sterilize the product.

That, and every character has been Flanderized.

/At least, that's how it feels to me
//YMMV

I'm up to 12 episodes on the dvr that i didn't get a chance to see when they showed, haven't watched much Simpson's over the last few years, not because i don't think they're funny, just fell out of touch with it, this marathon is great and it's been forever since I've seen most of the earlier episodes and I still know all the lines

Watched the 'Who Shot Mr Burns' episodes late last night, and can recall all the buzz around who might be the shooter. We were all talking about that cliffhanger.

It's kinda sad that the same arguments they mocked in the Simpsons 20 years ago are the same arguments anti immigrants are still using today.

Anyway let the bears pay the bear tax. I pay the Homer tax.
