(USA Today)   Man and his daughter catch a blue lobster, a 1 in 2 million find that is just like "winning the lottery." A really crappy lottery involving finding rare insects   (usatoday.com ) divider line

Well, maybe a $500 lottery.

Eh. If this entirely unsourced list of odds is even remotely accurate, it still beats a lot of ther potential 'lotteries' out there....

I thought I heard about a similar blue lobster story recently.. only this one made it to a grocery store lobster tank before someone went 'Hey, that's very unusual.'

A certain part of me is getting a little "blue" over the daughter

I'm glad he will not be eaten, but how rare is he, if the Aquarium already had three? Oh, and a yellow one.

FTA: LaPlante and his 14-year-old daughter, Meghan, were hauling traps when she discovered the 2-pound cerulean crustacean, the first time they've ever caught a blue lobster.

Cmon subby. Read your own articles.

it's an easy mistake to make. Providing you not only didn't read the article but didn't even look at the picture of the "son".

FTFA:Skyler won't be alone, according to aquarium staff. He will join three other blue lobsters and an orange one in their tank.
doesn't seem so special in that setting.

Not familiar with how old that that aquarium is or when they got the others. Lobsters live a long time,  Maybe the other two have been there for 50+ years.

Or, you know, Maine harvests an obscene amount of lobsters every year.  An article from 2012 shows they caught over 105 million pounds that year.  Figure 1.75 pounds per lobster and you get about 60 million lobsters.  That means you'd have about 30 or so of the blue ones every year.  Still pretty rare.

Comon. Take a good hard look at those things and tell me they aren't a few genes away from something you would want to step on.

No, the lobster won the lottery.

2014-08-24 09:07:36 AM
Well, when millions of lobsters are caught every year, 1/2000000 really means two or three a year. Hear about them often.

Now, a chimera lobster or an albino? Newsworthy

For something that is supposed to be really rare, I sure see stories pretty regularly about it.

Thank you.  I came here to say that.  Arthropod is the phylum, crustacean is a subphylum (formerly class).
