I thought about this for about two seconds and came to the conclusion that there will NEVER be a time when a man wants to spy on women in the shower with "pure intentions" unless those intentions are purely prurient.

Before folks get their panties in a wad, this is roughly equivalent to Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh saying something offensive to get publicity.

Men can spy on women in the shower, an extremist cleric has argued in Egypt, prompting outrage from other Islamic scholars.
...
Egypt's minister for religious affairs, Mohamed Mokhtar, condemned him

Baby, do you understand me now
When I hand you a loofah pad
But don't you know that no one alive
Can always be an angel
When I see things, please don't get mad
But I'm just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood ...

Yep, my intentions were pure - 100% wanted to jack off to the naked women.

Actually - and this may come as a shock to basement dwellers the world over - not all naked women are attractive.

Egypt has some strange religious authorities. Dr. Izzat Atiya said a woman can get around gender segregation at work by breastfeeding her male colleagues to make them members of her family. Mufti Ali Gum'a issued a fatwa stating that it was a blessing to drink the urine of the Prophet Mohammed and that his companions did it every day.

I don't think in other countries 9 out of 10 women experience sexual assault. In Egypt until very recently there was no law defining sexual harassment.
It's a bit different than western societies.
And the latest modifications to the laws in Egypt making sexual abuse (finally) a punishable offense is a joke.

They should add to the law that a male may only spy if he is a eunic, it could help.

This always annoys me when I hear feminists in the US talking about our so-called "rape culture." Please. In some parts of the backward third world, rape is considered a sport. Gangs roam around preying on young women in broad daylight, and then the women are stoned for being so shameless. Go visit Egypt. Or Saudi Arabia. Or Gaza. Or ISIS-controlled Iraq. Or India. Or Africa. Then come back to the US and talk to me about rape culture.

As an America living in Egypt....you're wrong. Yes sexual harassment is a serious problem here, and yes there were the high-profile attacks in Tahrir, but no, the rape squads you describe do not otherwise exist. In fact, though almost impossible to get reliable data, the US has a reported rape total per capita about sixty times greater than Egypt. Obviously there's major underreporting going on here, and everywhere. Still, sorry, can't use Egypt at least as the boogeyman to dismiss peoples' valid grievances with US culture. How many of the places you list have you actually been to, or are they just too scary and foreign?

Even if you're "point" was valid in this case, how is the fact that the situation might be worse somewhere else relevant? "Hey, America doesn't have a problem with gun violence, because 40 people were executed in Iraq this morning, and everyone in Mogadishu has a gun!". Whatever.

Also, glad some here have pointed out that this is pretty much the equivalent of "pat robertson says the gays cause tornados" or some other nonsense. BFD, who cares.

You should get a job at a rape counseling center where you can mansplain to the "victims" how the US is not as bad as Saudi Arabia.

I find that hard to believe, but like you said it's probably more under-reported in Egypt.  Seriously, what's she going to do if the police just sexually assaulted her?  Go for round 2 by trying to make a police report?

And even if it wasn't the police who assaulted her in the first place I suspect she's not going to get much help from them.

You probably know better than me since you're living there right now, but I think that country is farked - not as farked as some other African nations, but still pretty farked up.

And would it kill them to let those Al Jazeera journalists out of prison?  I'm not sure I can take another 7 years of AJ telling me how many days they've been locked up.  They mention it in just about every news cast.

Just because things are worse in other countries doens't mean there's no bad in ours.  There's nothing wrong with wanting your own country to be better than it is.

Won't argue with you there. Decades of corruption and mismanagement have taken their toll. Place is broke, now socially fractured, and people are frustrated. We'll see...

And would it kill them to let those Al Jazeera journalists out of prison?  I'm not sure I can take another 7 years of AJ telling me how many days they've been locked up.  They mention it in just about every news cast.

Forreal though. I think they probably will at some point in the not-too-distant future. Those guys unfortunately got caught up in a whole lot of ridiculous drama between Egypt, Qatar, the MB, and AJ....I hope some sanity returns and they get pardoned by our benevolent new leader.

This is just guesswork pseudo-sociology, but I don't have a hard time believing rape rates are lower here than the US. Part of an explanation might have to do with the nature of communities.....even in downtown Cairo, I know my neighbors, the guy selling fruit on the street, can get a pack of cigarettes and owe the guy a dollar tomorrow if I'm short today....people just know each other in a way that we don't in most of America. That provides some level of social control against crime. Chances are if someone commits a crime, a lot of other people know about it.

And even if some Egyptians do that, there's no reason to attribute sexual violence to the culture as a whole. Like for instance, in 2011 and 2012, there were, literally, no police in Cairo other than riot cops. Can you imagine what say New York with no police for two years would look like? I don't know but I bet it wouldn't hold together as well as they did here. People are just generally willing to look out for each other. There's plenty of pretty horrible examples of violence in all kinds of flavors to counter that, but I think there probably would be anywhere.

From what people visiting Cairo told me, the police there is so corrupted and abusive that people often avoid contacting them when they should. Baksheesh is also a major problem.
Can you relate ?
