Isn't social media, you know, social?

And oh puleeze--it's 105 preteens at an overnight camp for 5 days. Very scientificky.

Pfft, iphones. We never had iphones when I was a kid and I'm practically a shut-in.

I'm with you.  Social skills are overrated anyway.

/same study would probably apply to a lot of Farkers

I thought about making a comment but I'm too anti-social to post.

I've talked to enough older people to know that they barely have social skills as well. It'll be fine.

Having those blind canes would be a pretty good idea. On my campus I see a student with their nose buried in their phone walk right into a parking meter or light pole probably at least once a month.

Maybe a seeing eye dog would be better though. Two years ago one got creamed by a car while jaywalking.

A dog? That would be horrible!

Cool if it was somebody with their nose glued to a cell phone, though.

Social skills are overrated to begin with. But besides that, socially we are not drifting apart. If anything we are becoming more cohesive as a species every year.

We're not losing social skills. The skills are merely evolving to take advantage of a technologically interconnected world.

I clipped a texting student with my bicycle handle once. Idiot was walking in an erratic path and I didn't give him enough space.

You do realize in this stupid meme that these are all strangers who probably got on at different stations and will be getting off at different stations right? Cause it has no bearing on modern social media.

And people can't talk to others if they haven't been formally introduced?

If it was a photograph of a bus full of teens with their faces aimed at a screen people would complain that they aren't being social.

I don't give a shiat if teens are social. I give a shiat if they walk into me or wrap their car around a telephone pole whilst texting. That's not going on in that pic.

TFA isn't about people walking while looking at a screen, driving while looking at a screen or cycling while looking at a screen and I didn't quote anyone who was discussing people doing any of those things.

TFA was about people skipping actual interaction with looking at screens, I posted a picture of people skipping interaction to look at a piece of paper to be contrary. Your righteous indignation is wasted on me because honestly, I don't get why you are locking on to my post and why you think I'm somehow refuting your point.

Fine. But the picture doesn't apply anyway because by definition texting is interacting with people, just not face to face.

People do more on a phone than texting and the article was very specific about how people need face-to-face interaction instead of simply talking by way of text.

Which would mean that the picture does apply.

Maybe they won't develop social skills....but they will develop phone bills of $900,000 or more when
their parents discover the kids' aimless button-pressing caused them to make 2000 person-to-person
calls to New Zealand this month.

Same here.  Born in 1981.

Do you ever miss books though?  I think my phone and tabbed browsing have just murdered my attention span.  Trying to force myself to read at least one novel a month.  Used to read a couple a week.

Also '81.  I miss having time for books.  You see, If I start reading, I only stop for a bare minimum of sleep.  I can't put a book down. I'll just get lost in it and burn right through hundreds of pages per day.  The last book I read I was sneaking in chapters at work when I really couldn't afford to.

My problem is right now, I can't even guarantee half an hour of uninterrupted time.   Really it's my own fault, but yeah.  So I don't start reading a book until I know I have free time.  Which is almost never.

Same. I read plenty of stuff online, but rarely whole books (or ebooks) anymore.

The answer is probably to cut out TV completely--something I'm not yet willing to do. But to be honest I think it's perfectly reasonable to see book-reading decline when there has been an explosion of quality internet content, podcasts, and even TV shows. There are only so many hours in the day, especially if you work full time.

I moved from urban Japan to rural Tennessee about two and a half years ago and thirty minutes of ebook reading on a train in the morning and evening became an hour of staring out a windshield.
