After living on Kauai for years now, I think god just forgot about us. I will say that snorkeling on the Big Island is the best. Well, as long as you don't get boiled in the process.

We were told by multiple locals, park rangers, and friends to avoid Puna. We flew over it in a helicopter instead.

My wife and I honeymooned in Kauai 11 years ago and I would love to go back.  I'm thinking about a move, honestly.  What's the housing market like?  I seem to recall that it's very difficult to actually buy property there and I am averse to renting.  Any advice to someone looking to relocate to Hawaii?

Oh wait... Puna might burp, that's entirely different.
Somebody go check on grandma, say next week or so.
No hurry, she out walked that lava for 98 years now.

honestly, condos are cheap. Rent here is getting ridiculous.(look on Craig's list) unless you want to live in the middle of nowhere. Wait, that's redundant. Poipu is selling 1/4 acre plots for just under a million, but you still have to build. It really isn't hard to buy here at all. You just take the plung. We sold everything, brought over three suitcases each and started fresh. It's been AWESOME!

I never had to go to the doctor while I was there, so I don't remember any medical infrastructure.  I am going to soon be a Nurse Anesthetist and making the kind of money that can afford one of those plots.  Is there a market there or do people go to another island for major healthcare?

I used those plots as an example of how ridiculous property can be. For 300-500k you can get a nice 3/2. Depends where and what island. Oahu has great health care, Maui, pretty good. Here, not so much. Two small hospitals on the entire island with a handful of clinics. Feel free to email. EIP

Why don't they use the  ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eldfell  ) Eldfell method? it worked in Iceland...pump water on the lave to make dams blocking the lave from inhabited areas? They spend so much on warning people, moving them around, and rebuilding things, Wouldn't a pump directing the lava to the sea be more economical?

There are three hospitals on Kauai: Wilcox, KVMH & Sam Mahelona.

Wilcox might be your best shot as it's part of Hawaii Pacific Health and they might be able to use you at Straub & Kapi'olani on O'ahu at times.

When most people get really sick here though, they tend to go off island to O'ahu or back to the continent....

You really do not want to ever mess with Madam Pele here.

Years ago, I drove on a hardened lava flow on the Big Island. Houses had been engulfed. We are all just here temporarily and anything can be replaced.
