I thought we called them "all the 24 hour news channel anchors".

Also, this isn't really new, except for the remote feature.  Amusing speech jammer videos are all over the YouTubes.

I remember the first time I talked into a Nagra with the confidence switch turned on.  Yes, it interrupted my train of thought for a few seconds, but I got over it.

/It's a TAPE RECORDER, you weirdos.

Just hit the feedback loop and you can drown them out while silencing them.

Didn't they win the Ignobel prize for this a few years ago?

Love love love the headline, but that's not really "gun-like". It's a box with a handle.

I want two, one for work and one for home.

FTFA:
" it cannot stop people making meaningless sounds, such as "ahhh," that are uttered over a long time period "

Scientists: "So, it's painless, but most of the people we point it at keep making these meaningless long and loud "aaaaaahhhhhh" sounds. We don't know what that means. More experimentation is necessary."

Isn't this what happened to that newscaster that everyone thought was having a stroke during some sports event?

If the people in question are on TV, a device like that has been invented...it's called a "mute button".
(I guess this may not count because it's not really an American invention, since most if not all TV sets
are imported.)

FTA: "Published March 02, 2012"

Thought this sounded familiar. Even got the last story from Fark, I think.

I get the principle, but I wonder why this same effect doesn't prevent people from using public-address systems where there are echoes.

Also, I was kind of hoping for some sort of phase-cancellation trick, although I doubt that it's possible in practice. One of Arthur C. Clarke's Tales from the White Hart had fun with the idea.

I'm guessing that if the echoes are quiet enough, they can be ignored.
