Is there some new scare going around? I mean how can at least one person not stop to see if he needed help.

This would never have happened in New York. Some good Samaritan would have pretended to help him while stealing his wallet, watch and phone. Then he or she would have told everybody that he was OK but just fainted and would get off at the next stop while they are still clapping and cheering and slapping the "hero" on his or her back.

This is because Americans care, even crusty, distrustful New Yorkers. They never let a credit card go to waste in the pocket of a dead man.

A bit of cynicism makes for a good plausible story.

There was a case in Nanking a few years ago where someone helped an individual who had fallen and was blamed for causing the fall.  A judge ruled that the person offering help wouldn't do so unless they were responsible in some way and thus the person who had offered assistance was forced to pay some amount.

The entire blame the people helping you scam has reportedly made Chinese wary of offering assistance to strangers lest they be held accountable in some way.

This popped into my head. It's all your fault.

Sandwich: We're wanted men! We've got the death sentence on 12 systems.

Luke: I'll be careful.

Sandwich: You'll be dead

See, and that's why America is better. Sure, a lot of people would have run. If that was in NY a few would of stuck around and robbed him, then ran.

/This is why we have sweat shops there.

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out in the Shanghai subway last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

Chinese peasants and workers don't yet have a culture of helping strangers. This is because they couldn't afford to until quite recently and because they lived in dire poverty, rural blight and a dictatorship of the better paid elements of the Proletariat, such as celebrities and the politicians who manufacture them.

Just as you can't learn to be good drivers without a good car (one that cost you more than $100), you can't learn to be a good neighbour until you have the knowledge, skills and trust in other people to be helpful. The Chinese are learning a lot of bourgeois ways real fast. With time, helping people will become more common.

I hate to say it, but with the rate at which Christianity is spreading in Asia (even if it is only for showy weddings and such customs), the parable of the Good Samaritan is likely to spread also, as will trust and helpfulness.

It's like Homer Simpson says, a well-meaning religion. You know, the one with all the well-meaning rules that don't work in real life -- uh, Christianity. -- Homer Simpson, telling what religion the family belongs to. Of course the road to Hell is broad and smooth and paved, according to John Milton, with asphalt and good intentions, but hey, don't knock asphalt. I've lived in places with dirt roads and asphalt is better, just as the right sorts of Christianity, Judaism or Islam are often better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

There's no way that shiat is real. She wants to look like the caricature? I'm only inclined to believe it because I knew a troll woman who looked like her 4-year-old put her makeup on.

That story about the Chinese judge reminds me of lots of old pre-revolutionary stories and jokes that I have read. They haven't changed a bit in a century or ten.

Plus people assumed that the person who fainted was stabbed. There have been a lot of random stabbings in public spaces. In the panic, more people get stabbed.

Honestly people, what would you have done differently?

Some random stranger just passes out and gets all up in your business with his unconscious body? Wouldn't you leap in fright? And seeing someone leaping in fright, would you not also leap in fright in case it's something that you need to leap in fright from like someone else's baby with a shiat smudge on its face or the creepy old dude with a shoulder tumor who thinks it's perfectly appropriate to approach you for a threesome in the middle of you ordering a spicy chicken sandwich in front of a church crowd on a weekday night at the Chick-fil-a?

I think we call all agree that the answer is yes. Yes, absolutely, it's rude to pass out on someone in public, and may you die before you have to endure all the shame and embarrassment you've brought upon yourself and your entire family plus all your friends by passing out onto a stranger in a subway.

I wasn't there. That video was a lot better than the usual porn. I haven't been to the real Thailand since 2007.

I remember a day when someone in trouble in public would get some attention from bystanders. But decency seems to have gone out the window. Our end game seems to be making way more money than the other guy, no matter how miserable we may be.

It is not decency per se that has gone out the window. It is the indecency of a litigious society that has pushed out the basic decency. Ask any teacher or lifeguard about any physical contact that could be construed as "inappropriate touching".
