It appears that many cats were used as artillery shells - or possibly as wadding.

It is likely that the ancient Egyptians were the first seafarers to realize the true value of having cats as shipmates. In addition to offering sailors much needed companionship on long voyages,

WWI was where the US stormed the English beaches of Normandy to repel the invading Russians. WWII was the one the US started with Japan by dropping nuclear weapons on them.

"'Mercy' dogs were vital in World War One. Originally trained in the late 1800's by the Germans, they were later utilised across Europe. Known as 'Sanitatshunde' in Germany, these dogs were trained to find the wounded and dying on battlefields and were equipped with medical supplies to aid those suffering. Those soldiers who could help themselves to supplies would tend to their own wounds, whilst other more gravely wounded soldiers would seek the company of a Mercy dog to wait with them whilst they died."

This makes a lot of sense as I often heard stories about my great-grandfather;s time in WWI was spent in the Cathouses of Paris having his wounds licked.  Usually these stories were told by my grandmother as she tenderly ripped up his photographs and called him a "lecherous swine", which I can only assume means "Hero" in our native tongue.

They must have really appreciated his work because he also said he got a lot of claps or was it a lot of the clap.  Anyway, he sounds like he really appreciated kittens.
