If your beer needs a chilled glass, you need a better beer.

Gecko Gingrich: If your beer needs a chilled glass, you need a better beer.

Yep. I thought we went over this already.

That said, I would happily use this glass for soft drinks or iced tea or milkshakes...

Self-chilling?  Looks like you have to stick it in the freezer to get any real benefit.

Lame.

I thought there was an article not too long ago explaining how chilling a beer (or any beverage) makes you miss out on flavors because of the chill. Or something

Dear Mr Inventor/Originality Guy:

Please google the term "freezer mug".

That is all, thx.

That's why any beverage labeled "best served cold" is suspect. What are they trying to hide?

OTOH: I'm a beer snob who nonetheless can enjoy an ice-cold mass-market beer on a hot day. Rich flavors are not the only characteristic a beer can have.

This.  Nobody wants to slam a tepid imperial stout right after mowing the lawn.

That's exactly my point. If you need to hide flavors in your beer to make it palatable, you need a better beer.

People who drink beer for reasons other than getting drunk?

Hell, if your goal is just to get smashed, stick to hard liquor, you'll get there faster.

How quickly do you go through ears? Not judging, just trying to get a common frame of reference.

I'm pretty sure it's someone's lower legs. Like the person is sitting down in shorts.

And they deserve to be respected equally without regards to gender.

Self chilling = chills itself without the need for outside intervention.

Given that this just uses gel that must be pre-frozen in a freezer, this is just a fancy frosty mug.

Anything hoppy tastes like butthole if it isn't at least somewhat cold. A chilled glass is an OK way to quickly cool down a beer that wasn't refrigerated.

A pint of bitter, at cellar temp. There's nothing finer.

Self chilling.. if you chill it yourself

let me know when I can buy a beer stien that hooks up to a USB powersource and I can set to certain tempuratures.

OTOH i have found some beers to taste BETTER when they are warmer (Abita's Turbodog for one)

agreed, but the one downside of liquor is yes, it will get there faster, but it is hard to slow down and stay in the sweet spot.

very easy to miss the runway and end up in blackout lake, vomit valley or queasy city

My dad has had a set of these in his freezer for almost 20 years:

media02.hongkiat.com

So technically the "handless" almost-a-pint glass is new to the 21st Century, the Frosty Mug would automatically be the most important invention of the 20th Century, right subby?

Short of putting an ice cube in your beer (the Devil's work, make no mistake) there aren't many other solutions to keeping your beer cold in the outdoor sun.

You could lug around a mini-fridge, sure. You might even want to resort to drinking at haste

"Resort"?!

/drinks "shiatty" beer
/if I want something that tastes good, I don't drink beer

My tipple is Little Creatures pale ale. A very nice beer served ICY COLD! ICY COLD!

OTOH, I'm not into glasses. They just increase the possibility of the beer going flat. Also, these things take a couple of minutes to chill a glassful, so I'd need like three of them on the go at once.

/ICY COLD!

This "amazing technology" has been around for decades.

TFA makes it sound like this is some amazing breakthrough. The whole "gel in the sides of the mug/tumbler" thing has been around a long time. It's not "self-chilling" if you have to stick in the farking freezer. Hell, if you are going to do that, then just dip a nice GLASS mug in water, and then stick it in the freezer. Same effect.

Abita has a bad labeling thing. Their root beer label looks exactly like their beer labels, just a slightly different color. Logo, same. Finer print, different. I almost served a turbodog to a child. Of course, that bar had the root beer like two years before some idjit stocked the beer beer next to it in the reach-in...

That root beer is incredible on tap though. And even better with a shot of spiced rum thrown in.

Has anyone pointed out yet that this glass does not, in fact, actually chill itself, and requires manual intervention and refrigeration to operate?

That point seems to have missed everyone.
