So instead of using the $50,000 to help the homeless, he's using an unspecified portion of the funds to pay for a concert made up of bands he likes, to which he will sell tickets, and use an unspecified portion of the proceeds to set up a fund that will then give money to unspecified charities that will help the homeless.  Did I get that right?

Gee, it's almost like having a fund to finance organizing a benefit concert might actually raise more money than was initially spent to organize said benefit.  Somebody needs to contact all the other concert promoters and let them know about this unheard of way of gaining a large amount of return on an initial investment!  Who would have known!?

So how many folks are gonna freeze to death on the streets of columbus while he's investing? What's an apartment cost in Ohio, anyway, $7, $8k a year? That's six people with a bedroom and an address right there.

Seeing as it is the middle of summer, I'd say exactly none. I mean being homeless you even have to rule out those who might be taken by a rogue air conditioner or refrigerator malfunction.

And giving 6 people an apartment for a year will certainly go a long way towards fixing the homeless problem.

Well, take the average numbers of homeless that freeze to death in the US in a year and assuming an even distribution of deaths in the population, applied to Columbus' share of the US population, about four. Four homeless peeps will freeze to death in Columbus per year.

Frankly, I'm sure the "don't just dump money on the problem" rules that apply to helping Africa apply to homeless in Columbus as well. Supporting the various organizations that help the homeless is almost certainly a better long term idea than buying six mentally ill addicts a place to live for a year.

Yeah, why try to double or triple that investment to help even more people?  Just get 6 people a house and it's all good.  Even better, he could just give all the money to the job creators in the area and the free market would take care of the problem right?

People who live on the street tend to be mentally incapable of taking care of themselves. Getting something larger going than telling 6 people "Here is the key to a house for a year, have fun." is to be encouraged.

Please don't go all nirvana fallacy on us.

Why can't people just be happy that someone is trying to do a good thing for the homeless? Someone always has to turn it into a pissing match of whose idea is a better way to spend the money. Any sort of positive gesture to a homeless person is a good thing regardless of the magnitude and whether or not more good could be done by doing it differently.

Actually, I heard of more than 4 people dying on the streets last year who were 'homeless' in Columbus.

I have a lot of soup kitchen/social worker/homeless ministry friends. They finally opened a new shelter in a much needed area a few weeks ago that will help a lot this year, but the resources for homeless folks in this city are difficult to obtain.
