Wait...didn't California side with the North during the Civil War? Why is Confederate flag paraphernalia an issue? Did someone from the IE embarrass the state again?

Ban. Ban. Ban.

Another silly war over symbols.

California's dominant in-group decides that it doesn't like competition or defiance of its tribe's Authoritah, so it labels the out-group's symbols as "violent," then proceeds to send its armed foot soldiers to use force to grab them and hide those symbols.

Typical.

No, this happened in California.

If people want to celebrate traitorous losers that's their business... It makes you look like an ignorant, racist shiat-kicker, of course, but again, that's their business.

I can also see why a state wouldn't want to be associated with traitorous losers, though.

Considering it is just a ban on the state selling or displaying materials, and private citizens can continue to do so, your outrage seems misplaced.  Unless you think that the state should be required to sell Nazi and Al-qaeda memorabilia.

This is just political feel-good stuff that won't affect anyone to any extent.  California isn't exactly a stronghold of exclusion and intolerance.

I'm surprised a republican voted against it since it's an easy "See, we're a party of the people!" move.

I wonder at what point we'll have to ban the American Flag because of all of the horrors we've unleashed upon native Americans. The South was beaten and eventually forced to free the slaves. But all of America just cheated, wiped out, and pushed the American Indians into (what amounts to) concentration camps.

I suppose its just a matter of getting everyone to associate the American flag with native American genocide. Shouldn't be too hard.

I wonder what our new flag would look like. Probably a beautiful flag of pure white.

Gee, I wonder how anyone would associate the flag of a country that was formed entirely due to slavery would come to be associated with racism. I mean, it's really such a difficult association to make. You have to go all of one step.

In Texas v. White, the United States Supreme Court ruled unilateral secession unconstitutional, while commenting that revolution or consent of the states could lead to a successful secession.

That was 1869. Before this decision, the states had the right to leave the union. They did not commit treason. After this decision, not so much. So the flag could used today as symbol for people wanting to secede. The point is that it is just a symbol. It could mean different things to different people. Banning symbols is a bad idea.

Haha.  No.  The question was not explicitly decided by the SC prior to 1869, but had it come before the court sooner it would mot likely have been ruled the same way because the articles of confederation were ditched in favor of a Federal system.

There's a word for people who don't see that the confederate flag stands for racism and slavery.  Willful morons.  Like, banging their heads against brick walls until brains start dribbling out of their ears willful.

Even if you think that the flag also stands for wanting to secede, how do you manage to wash the history of four years of warfare to preserve slavery out of the cloth?

2014-08-22 08:25:25 AM
Um... Do you guys realize that California is more than just liberals and hippies? We have large areas of Republicans and tea parties, and I have seen people flying the confederate flag proudly. Hell, my own district has a tea party representative, and my local election this year consisted of two tea party members and unaffiliated (the incumbent won by more than 30 points, iirc).

Lot of concerned non-racists in here who apparently don't realize that all that happened was that the state cannot sell or display. If you want to rock it from your pick-up while rolling coal, knock yourselves out.
