No shiat. It's a block of extruded wheat flour with no vitamins or other nutritional value associated that's been deep fried in palm oil to maintain a brick-like shape and served in a broth made out of preservatives and salt?

Did anyone really think it was particularly healthy?

/Yes, ramen is already deep fried when you get it specifically to hold its shape.

Like most things, there are different quality products. If you get the .33¢ a pack Top Ramen, then yeah sure. Go to an oriental market and get the good (probably still bad for you) stuff.

/and add chicken and cheese

They're cheap, filling

Well, the third word in TFA is complete bullshiat, so I'm going to just dismiss everything else in it as an outright lie as well.

I had a friend in college who ate it at least once a day. He got real farked up and needed all sorts of blood pressure and cholesterol medicines, and he was a short skinny guy in his early twenties.

Yea I was going to come in and say that 98% of college students are now at risk.

In their defense, ramen was bad for you last week, as well.

Duh.  A ramen flavor pack is 90% of your daily sodium intake.

I've never seen noodles in a styrofoam cup.

Is that a thing in USA?

The Nissin we get here is in normal plastic.

Oh yeah I get the korean ramayun and I still feel like shiat if I have to eat it multiple days in a row

2014-08-21 07:06:57 PM
I eat these every single day and have developed high blood pressure over the past few years.  Maybe there's some kind of association here...

2014-08-21 07:07:05 PM
I'm partial to adding some shredded cabbage, julienne carrots, and peanut butter to my ramen, maybe a sliced boiled egg or dried shredded seaweed as well if I have them on hand

NOM NOM NOM

Although to be completely honest, I've had to subsist on so much ramen in the past that I have a hard time eating it anymore.

Life is sexually transmitted and invariably fatal. Nothing you can ever do will keep the reaper man away, so there really isn't much point to fretting about it. Also, do you really want THAT extra years of living in a retirement home that reeks of piss and shiat?

2014-08-21 07:12:41 PM
My former roommate used to make fun of me by saying "You're the only person who eats ramen because you enjoy the flavor. The rest of us eat it because we're broke."

2014-08-21 07:12:44 PM
Ramen can be good, but you need good ingredients for a proper meal. Which, in some cases, can be a bit more problematic.

2014-08-21 07:15:42 PM
Eh. I'm ok with them. Whatever makes a turd.

Somehow I don't think my 1-2 times a month Ramen is going to kill me.

My daily habit of Maker's & cheap cigars however.....

one of my favorite conspiracy theories from the 80s/90s was that American commercial "ramen" was intentionally stripped of all nutritive value, as a way for Big Business to keep the counter-culture types malnourished and unhealthy.

and i would point out that commercial ramen uses essentially the same ingredients as paste, and never had nutritive value to begin with.

2014-08-21 07:16:35 PM
fark, let me put it like this and save countless hours and dollars on research: anything and everything can kill you. Live life at your own risk.

2014-08-21 07:17:14 PM
I boil my ramen in mountain dew and then add 4 tablespoons of sour cream.

Does that make it even more unhealthy?

I ate much ramen in college. I usually jazzed mine up with eggs or veggies, sometimes meat.

And skip the flavor packet. It's just salt.

They also come in 6 or 8 pack Styrofoam cups, which allows them to add dehydrated carrots, peas and corn (tastes about as unpleasant as it sounds). I like the regular Maruchan noodles (chicken flavor), myself. Ramen and burritos got me through college.

CSB time

Senior week in OC, MD circa '84 - I wasn't even a senior but had a car and friends with week-long rentals. Got waayy too drunk & stoned on my first night there. Munchies kicked in and we hit the 7-11 for more beer and, for me, some ramen. Oriental flavor, IIR. Boiled up a few packs & went to chow town. Mmmm....

Several sweaty bed spins later I find myself hunched over the kitchen sink hurling up exactly the what I inhaled a few hours previously. Caught major grief the next morning from the housemates for the white & wheaty pile that occupied most of their sink. One of the senior girls was kind enough to clean up my mess and hand me a Coke. We dated for the rest of the summer, BTW. Shoulda married that one.

To this day I still love an occasional bag of blue-wrapped ramen. Moderation, folks.

/Not fat

Damn...i haven't even tried the ramen burger yet and already I have to give it up? Always a day late n a dollar short :-(

I eat a pack of ramen with a little diced ham nearly every breakfast.. I'm hungry by lunch so I figured it was OK... Now, sheesh...

I  usually make my ramen from scratch (just buy udon or soba, and go from there.  But, I still love cheap instant noodles maybe once a month.  (Cup 'O Noodles was my favorite after school snack as a kid, and that was the 80s-90s).

2014-08-21 07:40:31 PM
Well, you can avoid a lot of the sodium (not all, but a lot) by boiling the noodles but skipping the flavor packet.  A little bit of butter and parmesan cheese is nice, or even just butter.

Or you can do what I do which is to just crunch it up raw.  Deeeeeeelicious.  I kid you not.

2014-08-21 07:45:01 PM
Kill me?  meh.. doubt it.  Kill anyone within a 4 block radius of me 2 to 4 hours after I eat some?  quite possibly.. because dear lord.. I eat ANY brand of that motherfraklen stuff..  gas so bad I am pretty sure I have melted some of my ass hairs... and nose hairs...and I think my wife's eyebrows fell off that one time when I decided to treat her to a dutch oven that night.

I just dumped the water added butter, the flavor package and a little parm cheese. Yum

You can get away with that once in a while when you're young and in shape. I think I wouldn't try it now unless I was hooked up to a difibulator first.

You can have my Ramen when you flash boil the noodles in water to hydrate and soften them up enough that the pork seasoning packet can really permeate all the strands and then crumble up some wonderful saltine crackers to make a Ramen pot pie. No really, they're super cheap, have two of them. I don't mind. There's like 400 packs stashed in the pantry from when I went shopping at Costco while I was high off my ass on angel dust.

I never went the ramen route in college. There were poor months, and those months I ate a lot of beans and rice and cornbread. But the one thing I learned, you can afford a slightly better level of nutrition if you're not spending half your income on smokes and beer.

How do you explain China and Japan having the world's longest life expectancy then? Ramen over there, especially Japan, is a culinary and socializing staple. Probably the same idiots who are all like "MSG is teh cancers, OMG!!!!" with utterly no research to back it up.
