"The lone exception" that actually got a chance to be voted on and was passed into law? "[C]ourt-ordered protection for the pets of the victims of domestic violence."

Oh well then. It's all good.

For instance, the Post and Courier interviewed state House Minority Leader J. Todd Rutherford, a Democrat, about his refusal to support any bills increasing the maximum penalty for a first-time domestic violence offense, which is currently 30 days in jail. (The maximum penalty for beating a dog, the Post and Courier notes, is five years.) Rutherford "said such laws fail to take into account that many cases involve families that might be preserved," arguing that women frequently drop the charges because they "realize the destructive consequences for the whole family."

That doesn't even make sense, it's a maximum sentence not a minimum sentence.

Both are horrible. It's not an either or situation.

2014-08-20 07:51:49 PM
Well, duh. To them, a dog is a man's best friend. A woman is just a piece of property.

2014-08-20 07:55:19 PM
A person subject to abuse can call the cops and/or move out.  The dog cannot. The dog's only hope of being rescued is that someone else witnesses the abuse and there's enough physical evidence to convince a court to take the dog away, where it will likely end up in a shelter and euthanized.

The standard sentence for assault and battery in South Carolina is up to 30 days. Code section 16-3-600(E). The sentence for first offense assault and battery with the aggravating factor of domestic violence is up to 30 days, a larger fine, batterer's training. The sentence for a second or subsequent offense is much higher. Code 16-25-20. A conviction explicitly for a crime of domestic violence carries various disabilities under state and federal law. So they have made hitting your wife worse than hitting a stranger.

I'm more worried about the stupid 5 years for kicking a dog law. It's also worse to punch a dog than your wife in Massachusetts (5 years for felony cruelty to animals vs. 2 1/2 for assault and battery).

It's fair to more harshly penalize men who beat up ugly women (those women already have hard enough lives), but a 60:1 ratio compared to normal-looking women does seem excessive.

You know, there's something not right when the only victim of domestic violence you think is worth voting on is the family pet.

Angela Lansbury's Merkin: A person subject to abuse can call the cops and/or move out.

Careful, your dumb naïveté is showing. If a woman was capable to do this, she likely wouldn't be in an abusive relationship to begin with.

5 years for a dog and 30 days for beating a woman? Some women *live* through domestic abuse for more than 5 years before anything ever happens, and are often left with trauma that can last even longer than that. But yeah, 30 days, whatever.

This entire sentiment is just vile. This man is actually saying that it is preferable to maintain a "family unit" than a woman escaping an abusive relationship!

News flash chuckles! Women drop the charges against their scumbag abusive husband's because they've lived with the abuse so long they become accustomed to it and actually believe they deserve it! They don't meet to reconcile with their spouse, they need help and care, you twit!

So it's his "rule of thumb" to maintain the family unit No matter the cost?

You'd be amazed at how many people stay in abusive relationships because they're worried about leaving the pets behind.  They're right to be worried, fwiw.  The things that abusers do to the animals while the abused is out of the house is horrific beyond the pale.  By protecting the animal you're helping the abused get out as well.

well, a dog's body has no way of shutting that whole thing down

To be fair, the average amount of times you need to tell a dog is far greater than twice.
