At least he lived long enough to have one big victory.

He'll have to have three more diagnoses though.

Well thank god he didn't name the cancer NFC or he would have died.

Seconded on both counts. Hope the prognosis holds for him.

He told that cancer that it was straight out of a comic book, and it left him.

2014-08-20 07:21:27 PM
Dan Marino and Jim Kelly are the two greatest quarterbacks never to have died of cancer.

2014-08-20 07:23:28 PM
Good news. Hope it never comes back.

I can't get the local hospital to give me information on my parents condition, and this place issues a press release about Jim Kelly?

Scrotastic Method: Dan Marino and Jim Kelly are the two greatest quarterbacks never to have died of cancer.

I disagree. Marino died of cancer a couple of different times.

Ya, how is this not a violation of the law.

I'd imagine he authorized it.

Glad to hear.  fark cancer.

Hated Jim for beating our asses so many times, but I've always admired him.  Tough son of a biatch.

Doctors also confirm no trace of Superbowl rings.

Dude was supposed to be a linebacker.  He just was smart enough and could throw a pass well enough that he caused the entire NFL to be rearranged.  And gosh darn it, he was tough enough and people liked him, and he paved the way for every QB today who can call a play.

Good luck Mr. Kelly.  Win this time.  There aren't many NFL players I respect as much.

Possibly because Kelly himself authorized it? How many concussions have  you had, and were they all from knee jerks so hard they struck your head?

/ And what is it with folks who think the best thing to do with a feel-good story is to immediately take a steaming dump on it anyway?
// Don't they have meds for that kind of desperate bitterness?
/// Or at least bourbon?

One thing I've leaned about squamous cell carcinoma, never say it's all gone.

//I would really like it to be gone

This. But, I hope his relapse is longer than shorter and that we make great strides in curing it between now and then.

I was at the HOF last weekend. In one of the displays devoted to this man, there hangs a pair of game socks. Printed by the manufacturer, under the brand name, it says "For Linebackers."

He truly had that mentality. It's just too bad a football couldn't hook through the uprights on one play, one day.

The Bills win even 1 of those Super Bowls, and Kelly enters the upper echelon of NFL QB's.  He has Scott Norwood to blame for his 2nd tier status among the greats.

That is amazing news! I thought he was a goner

well they really only had 1 chance to win it...

but anywho, great to hear about Kelly

Probably the best news us Bills fans will get all year.

2014-08-21 09:19:38 AM
As a Jets fan I hated Jim as a player and reveled in the Bills' Super Bowl losses, but I was very glad to see this news.  Guy's had to deal with a TON of stuff over the years.  Kelly Strong, indeed.

2014-08-21 09:57:37 AM
That is awesome. Great news for him and his family.

2014-08-21 10:20:08 AM
So the cancer performed as well in Kelly's sinus cavity as the Bills did in all those Super Bowls? Good to hear. Had to be said. This is Fark after all.

Hey, Fran Tarkenton never died of cancer either.

Scott Norwood had NEVER made a FG as long as that one on a grass field.  There's plenty of blame to go around before you get to the guy missing a 47-yard FG.

Blame Jim Kelly for playing right into the Giants defense's hands by not handing the ball to Thurman Thomas 25 times.  That was Kelly's offense, and he called almost twice as many pass plays as runs against a defense playing most of the game with two down linemen.

The Bills had the ball with a 12-3 lead in the 2nd quarter - Incomplete, Incomplete, Incomplete, punt.

Later in the 2nd, also with a 12-3 lead, two runs and two short passes to Thomas gained the Bills 40 yards, at which point on 2nd-and-2 Kelly decided to throw a bomb to a well-covered James Lofton.  A false start penalty and complete pass short of the marker ended that drive and gave the Giants the ball back with enough time to drive 87 yards for a TD before the half.
A score by the Bills on either of those drives and the game is OVER.  You can also blame Andre Reed for dropping everything thrown to him after the 1st quarter.  And the 10 missed tackles they had on 3rd-and-13 for the Giants on their first drive of the 2nd half.  A Giants FG there only puts them ahead 13-12.  Instead, Mark Ingram got the first down, they eventually scored a TD to go ahead 17-12, which put them in position to need only a FG to take the lead when Thomas (there's that man again) ripped off a 31-yard TD run early in the 4th.

He's had 5 chances now to win the big one. I'm glad this is the one he won.
