Still obscure, because I've never heard of it or the band.

JJW was known to write some incredibly non- politically correct music. I'm a fan.

The album excellently captures Walker's strived-for "gonzo country" sound, a laid-back country base with notes of "outlaw" rock, blues, and traditional Mexican norteño and Tejano styles.

That all sounds horrible.

I have it on vinyl. I'll have to break it out and play it for the kids. Luckenbach's turned into sort of a tourist trap now though they still have good music shows.

There is one song on Spotify from them.  I'll give it a shot.

Tourist AND biker trap! Luckenbach has turned into the devil's arsehole for wannabe bikers. Back in the day, we'd meet up at Jim's Restaurant in Austin and ride to Luckenbach (riceburners, Harleys and Big Dogs welcome in the pack). Now it's just cram packed with dumbass riders with brand new Harleys that have neither been ridden nor worn.

Do Devil's backbone instead.

But yes, fark Luckenbach. It was nice while it lasted. Texas Hill Country is still one of the best places to ride.

At least they aren't drinking Bud Light. Closest beverage to a canoe possible.

My Mother lives in Canyon Lake. To get there we go Fredericksburg then through Lukenbach. Some days the traffic is farking horrendous. We never bother to stop.

Definitely. My dad has it on vinyl, bought back in the day. Heck, he might have been at the show.

I listened to it throughout the metal, emo, punk and grunge phases. It's been awhile though, time to revisit.

Is JJW still doing his birthday shows every year? I've been out of Austin for 10 years and have lost track of a lot. How's his health these days?

Regarding Terlingua, are their a lot of tinfoil hat types out there, or just the one old college friend I know who lives there? Really nice guy as I remember him, but he flies off into the Alex Jones zone at times.

Been a fan since 1978 when my then girlfriend (Hi Mel!) dropped the phonograph needle on the album.  Great sing along road music.  Have seen him in concert a couple of times - opening for Willie at Stanford University where JJW was so drunk he couldn't remember the words to the songs and again at McCabes in Santa Monica where it was a very intimate unplugged session.  Both were great.

Yep. Everything will try to stab or eat you in West Texas. Bring real liquor and real music....Jerry Jeff, Willie, and a little Pat Green perhaps.

Dancin_In_Anson: The cover of London Homesick Blues was a great closer.

The reason why Gary P. Nunn mentions putting himself back in that place again is that they'd just sang the song -- and supposedly it was awesome, more awesome even than the recorded version. Kind of like how Hetch Hetchy is supposedly even more awesome than Yosemite. Anyway, to get the recording right they did it again so Nunn having just put everything into Homesick has to get himself back in the moment.

VT is the absolute soundtrack of my teenage years. I have it in vinyl, cassette, cd, and digital. Between 1975 and 1993 (when I left Texas) I saw JJW at least 75 times in various bars and concerts. (I've no idea how often I saw Townes, Ray Wylie [though he disappeared for a while], Steve Fromholz, Rusty Wier, Guy Clark, Alvin Crow, Willie, Joe Ely, etc etc. This being the days before the mothers got mad I was able to get into all sorts of disreputable places as a teenager. Armadillo World Headquarters. Broken Spoke. Continental Club. The original Antones.  Awesome time to be in the Hill Country.

2014-08-20 10:50:31 PM
One of my best nights as a teenager was being 18 at Ann Richards' inauguration, dancing the night away with a local Austin girl I had the fortune of being hooked up with by family friends, all while JJW was playing and singing within yards of us all.

/And she was easy.
