That grouper had to be the size of a VW beetle to swallow a 4' shark like that.

This is for our Hebrew brethren: what is now called a "Goliath Grouper" used to be called a Jewfish. Do you consider jewfish objectionable, and if so, why?

I loved that poem as a kid. "One fish, two fish, red fish, jewfish."

I'd be more impressed if he landed the grouper after that.  Last time I was flyfishing, I had a ~18" cutthroat trout on, which subsequently got taken by an enormous Brown.  I nearly landed the both of them, until the Brown spit out the cutty when it got close to shore (kept the cutty, though).  It was a lot of fun with the 3 weight rod I was using.

Funny thing is that in areas where you'd actually find these fish, absolutely NO ONE calls them "Goliath Grouper". This has to be one of the most stupid change-of-names-due-to-political-correctness I've ever known.

Groupers get pretty big.

I came nose to nose with a giant grouper while SCUBA diving in Hawaii.  That was interesting.

You're just a lowly Cheddar Monk,
Always running out of tricks;
But a spell I know will change your luck
When you get to level six.
It doesn't burn like Fireball spells,
And it won't boost like Greater Wish;
But the thing I always find excels
Is Summon Bigger Fishia

to make the Gungans food to eat,
Summon bigger fishia
to save you from the laundry fleet,
Summon bigger fishia
to send your foes into retreat,
Without this spell you're incomplete:
Summon bigger fish...
Summon bigger, summon bigger fish!

Had a good size bull trout inhale a grayling i was reeling in this year. Landed the bully with the grayling half out of its mouth! My gf caught a 10" bull trout with a massive mouse hanging out of its mouth this summer too.. i cant figure out what that little bully was thinking.. he was literally stuffed to the gills with a mouse, but took a 3" spoon lure!

Have also landed a few pike that had been attacked by larger pike during the fight. I don't swim in waters with northern pike anymore.. those fish will eat anything that moves.

Mr. Lawson -- Marathon checking in here ! We probably know each other. Or one of us tossed a beer in the other's face at the Brass Monkey or something.

The name Goliath grouper --- and yes, people now call it that -- is weird because David slew Goliath, and Goliath grouper (very friendly and harmless fish) can eat almost anything. They get huge. We have the Jewfish Creek Bridge here in the Keys. An effort to change it to Goliath Grouper Creek Bridge went nowhere.

I wonder if a grouper has ever eaten a human being? I mean it's physically possible.

Oh god, no. I'm going to think about it while masturbating tonight.

I don't know... I'm not sure if it has been documented anywhere, but I'm going to say that a fish which probably gets as big as 10 (muscly, wide) feet long and over 1300 lbs., and is an active hunter that eats pretty much anything it finds in the sea that it can get its mouth around has probably snacked on a person at some point. Those big ones range all through the Indo-Pacific, and I have no problem finding it plausible that one might have snatched up - lets say - a fishing Indonesian boy or a Cambodian dude swimming in a river.

Bull trout are pigs.  we used to fish for them quite regularly (before they were endangered (*rollseyes*)) around here and it was very common to catch them with several smolt tails sticking out of their mouth as you reel them in.  Caught one once with 21 smolt in its stomach.

It LOOKS like he swallowed the shark, but really, the camera shakes away, and there's a big splash.... I think more likely, it just swam off with the shark in its mouth, and we just can't see it because of the perspective.

Whoa, some good fishing tales in there. The one at the very end is eerie. Thanks for sharing.
