Weird, he had such a good track record when it came to directors.

What's wrong with Kevin Smith? Is he hard to work with or something? Kills your future career? I liked, to varying degrees, all the Askewniverse films, and I thought Zack And Miri was funny. Haven't seen anything since Z&M though. I've always thought he came across as like a pretty likeable dude.

The one on the left is Kevin Smith's, the one on the right is Johnny Depp's.  Neither one is that bad, though Depp's has that pinched-looking model thing going on that I'm not particularly attracted to. (not that I'm actually attracted to either one - no, I don't need to take a seat over there)

And that's why Smith's wife is the coolest.  And posed in playboy, and was quite hilarious in Jay and SIlent Bob Strike Back.

Any story Kevin tells about her, I am super jealous of him for finding a hot, super devoted wite.

Agreed with you... until another Farker recommend the podcast where we listened to Smith live concept the movie in a bizarre stream of consciousness. It sounds like one of those movies that I would watch with my friends who love insane horror film and B budget absurdity.

Hearing him talk about filming Red State was pretty cool. He shot digitally during the day and edited at night. Less than a week after shooting finished he was able to show the final cut at the wrap party.

That was a funny story. Their latest podcast (C3P-eh) is pretty damn funny as well. It's them riffing on a true on-going experiment in which Canadian engineers have put a hitchhiking robot into the world to see if it can trust humans.

Yeah, but when is your middle name really used? In stories like this, when you're in trouble, or if you have the same name as someone already in the Actor's Guild.

Well, like most of us losers, he's fat, he loves sports and comic books and star wars and stupid shiat on the internet. Normally we'd be fine with that, but he has a hot wife. We MIGHT be able to forgive the hot wife if that were the end of it but he also has millions of dollars. That we cannot abide.

2014-08-20 03:20:40 PM
Always liked Smith. Clerks, Dogma, Chasing Amy were great, Hated Mallrats Jersey Girl though. Glad to see he has reinvented himself into more of a visual filmmaker then a dialogue driven one. Even though he still can't help himself with the blah, blah, blahs of dialog diarrhea.

Tusk looks very interesting and Red State was great. As much as he loathed the experience of Cop Out and will never hesitate to crap talk about it, It did change him for the better as far as his craft as a Filmmaker go. But in his own independent way. There will always be dick and fart jokes and a juvenile approach.

Always dig his podcasts..Esp Fatman on Batman..The Grant Morrison one is great

I never understood the Kevin Smith hate.  Not that I've loved all his movies, but I like most of them.  He went from cool guy that people think is funny and want to hang out with to "omg I hate him for being fat or something and no he's not funny anymore for reasons."  He might have gotten a little cocky which turned some people off, but the hatred seems extreme.  Meh, he seems like a cool enough guy and has some talent.  I respect him for what he's been able to accomplish, especially since he is a dorky average guy type.

Both their daughters look fine.  Depp's definitely looks like her mom so it's easy to tell who is who.

2014-08-20 03:45:17 PM
Last non-clerks movie he made that I liked was Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.  Seems to have lost his juju this past decade and it happens to some directors (see Oliver Stone).  Not that he is taking advice from random internet aholes, but he made his name with a certain type of film and he has largely failed when he has tried to venture out of that comfort zone (e.g. Jersey Girl, Red State).  He should take a page from Tarantino's book and just keep dancing with the one that got him there.

It's because at the end of the day, he is the one movie director that is most like the average Farker (fat, geeky, snarky sense of humor, fan of comic books and Star Wars) and if there's one thing that Farkers have, it's a heaping dose of self-loathing.

voran: Its like anything here at fark, we like it until other people like it, then it sucks and anyone who likes it is obviously retarded.

This is untrue. Kevin Smith is not and has never been popular, at least in the real world. Most people outside of the internet have probably never even heard of him.

More dick and fart jokes, less nepotism. I enjoyed the Jersey flicks, when he strayed from that they were less enjoyable.

Don't you mean "something something 75% of all anime ever made something"? Even if he directly steals the "endlessly reincarnating chosen one" motif, makes her a cheerleader with ninja fighting skills, and has her primarily fight vampires and zombies, it's still such a shopworn trope that you'd have to go back a LOT farther than Buffy to find the original that everyone else "stole" from. It's essentially its own genre by this point.

I like Kevin Smith because Kevin Smith he reminds me of every comic book store owner I've ever met, with the same charm and the same flaws.  He's funny, smart, cares about the same shiat I care about, comes from the actual middle class, and he's a kind of nervous, insecure dude who really wants people to like him in a kind of desperate way.

He's seems like a real dude.
