It's a hoax because it's Texas.  The first few thugs who try some shiat will discover want it's like to be ventilated.  No one is that stupid.  Not even Texans.

OgreMagi: It's a hoax because it's Texas.

This. Texas only exists because they dropped more Mexicans than tequila on Cinco de Mayo. This has held over into their culture to this day. Of all the states in the union, they're the LEAST likely to be unarmed or unwilling to engage an intruder.

It's a hoax, just like the one supposedly going to happen in louisville KY last weekend.

I imagine the idiots that are in that particular area are hoping people would be stupid enough to try it

And Chicago and Detroit (but who would even notice)

Anyway, Texas just felt a little left out and wanted a reason for pearl clutchers to panic

yeah, of all the places to "purge" i would not try it in texas.

especially not in the houston suburbs. I've gone out in public in those suburbs and I was the only person not wearing camos. even at an expensive bar or restaurant. all camos.

people who wear camos have guns. probably lots of them. they probably make their own bullets. and, they have no necks. people without necks are prone to violence. probably because they're so upset about not having a neck.

/ only place with more guns than houston suburbs is new orleans. where everyone has a gun.

It will be a purge. Gene pool purge of those dumb enough to think this is real.

2014-08-20 11:20:25 AM
The pretext of those films is that the yearly purge is a cover for the government to go out and target the homeless and the poor, to create slack on social safety nets.  San Francisco could take care of its homeless problem, but Texas would lose a lot of population when the rednecks meet big government.

I saw the first one and was bored out of my mind.  Didn't see the follow up.

2014-08-20 11:20:34 AM
a purge night in major cities would be amusing, I absolutely support it
texas is not the place you want to screw around
howabout california, new york, florida go first?

2014-08-20 11:20:57 AM
oh my gaaaaaaw.

These things are legitimately the sign to me that either society is too dumb or too old. Nobody, and I mean nobody, is going to do anything of the sort that already isnt planning on doing it. Like someone who tried to post that '112 people died in chicago' on a 'purge night'. How many of us make 'Chicago shoots each other a lot' jokes on Fark all the time? Its as if all crime was eradicated before these movies and these wrascaly teens are ruining our peace and love-fest.

Very few things are legitimately frustrating. That this is 'news' is one of them.

2014-08-20 11:21:20 AM
How many incidents, isolated though they may be, add up to a purge?

Purge night?  They sound fat.

There was quite a bit  of "purging" during the Great Recession of 08/09.   those at the top cleaned out the barn, so to speak.  Brilliantly done.

kinda' hard to do the other type of purging in a nation full of armed citizens.

According to this site, Texas ranks 30th in gun ownership by percentage of population among the states. The data is from 2007 so Texas might have moved up since then.

It being Texas, I don't see anyone trying to rob liquor stores or breaking into homes.  On the other hand, I could see some rednecks deciding it was their chance to "purge" folks they don't like, expecting it to be totally chaotic that night, and thinking they will be able to get away with it.

The Louisville Purge was amazing. No one was spared. Not even the children

I thought that is what war was for?

The Purge is one of the most idiotic dystopias I think I've ever heard of.

Many years ago, we had a guy in our ww2 reenacting group(we were US GI's), turn out to be a full blown member of the Texas militia.

We dropped that guy like a bad habit. He then spent the next year or so making vague threats towards me, since I was in charge, I was the one responsible.

In any case, he's from the Woodlands, so I'm guessing he's praying something happens.

Damn he was a nutter.

The movie was overhyped, underdelivering garbage and I would expect no less from this stunt.

I need to read the news more closely.

I didn't know that Ferguson was in Texas.

Of course it's a hoax... purge night won't officially kick off until Obama takes away white people's guns.

Don't you have to binge before you can purge?

Chicago needs a "everyone sit the fark down and stay home" night. Of course the next night would probably be four times worse, but hey.

They're just jumpy because they can't see turn their heads to see what's behind them. Kind of like how you have to be careful walking behind a horse.

The whole concept is stupid.
1.  How could one night of legal mayhem conceivably work.  Mayhem is illegal every night now and we have it.  Why would being illegal for only 355 days make it only happen on one day?  "I was going to shoot my wife for cheating on me, but I have to wait until September" is not a thought that would happen.
2.  What advantage would employers have for a world where unemployment is 1%?  Do you have any idea what the wages would be at Dairy Queen if unemployment was 1%?
3.  WTF would a bum wait around all year for someone to kill him when he could go kill them, and this assumes the bum is some kind of rational actor in either case.  My wife saw bum fight yesterday that made little sense.

Yes, I realize that "it's just a movie", but stories have to conform to the realities of the world they create.  Since this is supposedly occurring in the Real World, then it has to conform to the economic and social realities of that world.  I realize that Spiderman can spin webs and it's not a real thing, but Spiderman doesn't start talking to fish in the middle of the movie.  That would break the rules that the story created.

Ok we have Kathleen reporting live from Houston.  Kathleen go ahead.

Bob, any second now the purge will commence and we are expecting a night of mayhem, murder and...wait...Bob I am just getting reports that all the "purgers" have been wholesalely slaughtered by the citizens of Houston.  The purge, it seems, lasted a total of 1 minute, and there are no civilian casualties.

Well...this is awkward...we thought that it would...well...ummm... They ever find that plane?

Bob, the search area is now approximately 225 square parsecs or half of our Milky Way.

Interesting...will that "black box" be able to be seen in the vastness of space?

Actually Bob, it's red.

If you're going to start a rumor that the plot of a movie is going to happen In real life, can we at least pick one that didn't suck like an Electrolux?
