In an email to TPM, Andrew Schwartz, senior vice president for external relations at CSIS, said an intern made the error.
"It was sent by a CSIS intern who had access to our account for monitoring purposes," Schwartz told TPM. "Apparently he meant to send something reflecting his personal views from his personal Twitter account."

Is intern error the new overzealous staffer? The NTSB blamed an intern for this debacle:

"Our last tweet was sent in error"

We apologize for accidentally appending "suck it" to our previous tweet.  We meant to say "but we appreciate your hard work" and hit a few wrong keys.  Seriously, they're pretty close together; it's a typo anyone could make.

Good to know that they keep us interns around as human shields. That kid probably worked his/her/their little Hoya ass off to get that position

Speaking as an adult, I'm getting a little tired of babysitting at work. I wish we'd do away with interns at my business. We pay better than McDonald's, but the service we get is about the same. More butt crack too. Sigh.

Just venting. We have one guy who's really amazing.

While I support Amnesty International, it's self-defeating to antagonize an entire country for deficiencies in human rights. One that I imagine provides the lion's share of funding for AI's funding. I fully expect the intern responsible for AI's tweet to be suspended as well. I'll just wait for that right here. Shouldn't take long. Nope, not at all.

So who gave the lowly intern the credentials to log in to the twitter account?

What a load of crap.

You'd figure that a think tank could come up with a better excuse.

Better self-censor.. wouldn't want to lose any sweet funding by speaking truth to power.

Based on the trolls who post here on a regular basis, I totally believe that was some low level staffer (although perhaps not an "intern"), quite full of him/herself, who forgot which alt he was logged in as when he posted that.

According to AI they do get some funding from the US state department but most is from individual members. The US makes up 250k out of 3 million members worldwide.

I suspect the majority of the 250k probably agree with the recent statement.

So, meh.

Would never apologize

Amnesty International is outright Anti-Semitic when it comes to dealing with Israel....and its comments supporting the Michael Brown riots only condone violence...Brown assaulted and committed battery on Ofc Wilson

AI is very left wing...and sure doesn't show any Amnesty if you're not a leftist

Yes that is correct. Also the entire nation uses one twitter account that is controlled by right wing idiots and every last citizen of the United States agrees with everything they have and ever will say.

While their tweet was dumb, Amnesty is just one of a long string of attention whores trying to benefit from what happened in Ferguson.

Fark them.

In fairness, Amnesty International's focus is poor enough and its message control weak enough that it quite frequently wanders away from anything useful and into just being the self-fellating types that define the negative stereotypes of the left wing.

So... sometimes they really can kinda suck it.

Albeit in this case I'm not really sure "suck it" would be my response, I'd be more inclined to point out that their premise is flawed and the  entire point of having an international community in the first place is to provide pressure on each other to shape up on things like this.  If we pulled the "well, everyone's slipped up once, therefore we shouldn't be down on this guy" shiat the first world would just be be casually letting nations get away with things like genocide and ghettoization all the ti... aaaaaand I just realized what's wrong with the world.  Thanks for contributing to the attitude that gave Rwanda it's pleasant recent history, I guess, AI.

I don't really believe for a second that people put interns in charge of their public facing media formats.

2014-08-20 07:21:42 AM
It's about time they focus some attention to human rights abuses here in the US. There are people in this very thread arguing it isn't needed. Yet we tortured some folks, reporters keep getting arrested and prosecuted by the executive branch. We have innocent men locked up in an island prison for 10+ years.
Nope no problems here that amnesty has experience dealing with. I think it just makes the USA USA USA crowd uncomfortable when a group who normally deals with shiatty governments starts to pay attention to what's going on in the US

kindms: It's about time they focus some attention to human rights abuses here in the US.

They do that. We're the low-hanging fruit, compared to the Zimbabwes and North Koreas.

2014-08-20 07:32:49 AM
CSIS also stands for Canadian Security Intelligence Services.  For a minute I thought that maybe my government was telling Amnesty International off, which would have been more news worthy.

Come to think of it why would a think tank want to have the same acronym as an intelligence agency in a neighboring country?  That seems like it could get confusing.

2014-08-20 07:33:47 AM
The free, unpaid, enthusiastic intern was working for CSIS ISIS, a common mistake,  It was Twitter's fault.

Perhaps the person who did the submission of the tweet of this felt it to be the gray area. However as had been learned if the area is gray it is not something you can say.

In other words, as long as we're better than Zimbabwe and North Korea, there's no cause for concern.

In high school I was a member of Amnesty International.  I stopped going to meetings when I walked in and was told we were making Christmas cards for political prisoners in Turkey.
