Get some good low-angle stuff.  Don't make it too obvious, but I wanna see tastefully done and non-prurient photographs of a serious artiste that in no way objectify her or portray her as anything other than a human being deserving of our respect.

I was going to make a Kate's bush joke, but I'm not sure if it's compatible with the new FarQ.

"I very much want to have contact with you as an audience, not with iPhones, iPads or cameras," singer says

That makes sense. So many people go to events and watch the whole damn thing through their viewfinders instead of witnessing the event, you know, LIVE.

From the stage it must look like a sea of devices rather than faces.

Cell phones are the worst thing to happen to concerts that I can remember. There are venues that make you give up cigarettes/lighters on the way in and they can't ban phones? It's bullshiat.

Its obnoxious.  I went to see Arcade Fire recently and was on the floor.  Every other person had their phone out recording bits and pieces of the show.  Put that shiat away, you'll never watch it again and the quality is shiat.  People just do it so they can brag that they were there on FB

re: cell phones + concerts

cons:

mostly mentioned above...i'd also add that there is always at least 1 that rings and annoys me, and there is always at least 1 person near me talking loudly on theirs when i'm trying to pay attention to the stage

pros:

i think it enhances the cigarette lighter experience on the slow/ballad/touching songs, and for us non-smokers who also hate touching hot things, it's a good substitute

i do like going on youtube later on and finding clips of shows i've been to

I went to see Yes recently and every other person had their phone out for parts of songs, not even recording the whole song (granted, who could hold up their phone for 20 minutes).  It is annoying a all get out.  Please stop.

Seriously. Went to my first concert in 10 years last year and had 3rd row seats. More than half the people watched the entire show through their phones. The thing was, the band was spread out all over the stage, and it was cool to see all the parts interacting, but these people couldn't see that. I wanted to yell at them, "PUT DOWN YOUR PHONE, DUMBASS, YOU'RE MISSING A GREAT SHOW!"

i think it's great for snapping photos, but i don't want to record a show, for sure...i'm there to experience it live...that's the point of a live show. and as far as photos, i'm always about 3 years behind on cell phone technology, so i don't really have one that snaps good shots from a distance in a strangely lit room, anyway

Is this the modern equivalent of people going to concerts just to buy the t shirt and tell people all about it the next day?

Or did everyone in the past go to concerts because they LOVED the group playing?

2014-08-20 09:28:05 AM
I haven't been to a concert in 20 years myself.. and since I'm getting up for work at 10 pm, it's awkward for me to attend one, if a band I liked actually came to St. Louis.

The Mrs is a HUGE Jason Mraz fan, and while I'm pretty "meh" on him (it was for her, not for me), I gotta say he and his band put on a great show, I was really surprised.

Yes, especially if you're on the floor.  People have their hands in the air in front of you where they would otherwise be down.  Not to mention the bright glare of the screen catching your eye.  See Sybarites photo above.

Oh, and Kate, please reconsider playing in the States.  I would pay Eagles/Stones ticket prices to see her live if she toured over here.  I'd probably see several shows.  Especially if she played the Ninth Wave suite, which I consider to be one of the best pieces of music ever recorded.

It's just a sign of the times. Not only do the 20-somethings need to record every part of their lives, but they immediately need to Facebook/Tweet it in real time. In the meanwhile, a great concert is happening that they're completely detached from

I maybe take 1 or 2 pictures of a concert during a song I don't care for. Other than that, I'm there to see the band perform. Watching the band through your phone seems to me to be like watching a youtube video of the concert. The only band I've seen in the last 5 years is Tegan and Sara so I know that a huge chunk of the audience will be holding up their phones. So I always spring for the VIP tickets so I can get into the venue early and take an elevated viewing spot so I can see over all those phone. It also helps that their audience is usually fairly short and I can see over them anyway.
