They have been. Some threw water bottles and the demonstrators where pointing them out earlier.

TheJoe03: JimmySlicings: Why is it that all of the action occurs at night?  Is there any protesting during the day?
I wonder what the police presence is on the main drag during the daylight hours.

The biggest protests are in the daylight, and are peaceful. It's obvious why shiat goes down at night, it's dark.

Well of course, the bad things happen at night.
The protesters have been complaining that the troublemakers are just that.... troublemaking and they don't want to be lumped in with that group or associated with their negative actions.   Why not just keep the protesting during the day and let the aggravators do their own thing and try to separate themselves even more so?

Caffienatedjedi: Twilight Farkle:"fog of war"

Part of it comes down to the fog of war, but when they shout "I don't care" when they are told "But State troopers told me x" I have an issue. Radio in for confirmation real quick, if possible. Or at least be more respectful about it. I think police conduct has been below standards, and the lack of respect and use of profanity has really undermined their authority. Respect cannot be demanded, it can only be earned. So I respect a lot of the state troopers, and that one guy ordering dispersal that was fun about it. I don't respect the guys using profanity and threats of violence to enforce their authority.

I'll play Devil's Advocate for a bit. Even on the 'net, we can't get that sort of confirmation within 30 seconds. Looking back at this thread, and thinking back about last night, it took less than a minute between the first water bottle being thrown and everybody on the ground due to anticipated and/or actual gunfire. We have the luxury of being able to take in two or three streams at a time, and my brain melts at about four or five simultaneous audio streams. From the POV of some random officer who's answerable to only one chain of command (and whose commander also has only a voice radio, if that, maybe even a POTS phone) has no way of knowing what other agencies are doing, nor does he have any way of finding out in a timely fashion.

Feed Vice/Pool - legal observer in green hat being arrested. Police clearing street so that an ambulance can come in. Tense situation at McDonald's. 4 people sitting on ground incl one NLG legal observer.
Feed IaMB is back up, they've left the area and are back on the air, reporting problems with connectivity.
Feed Vice/Pool - arrestee/detainee account seems to be up to 9-10.

That is why I made sure to qualify that statement. If there is a lot of net traffic, they won't be able to radio in for a quick confirm. I'd just expect them to have a lot of their reaction plans pre-planned and to show respect towards people. Firm, Authoritative, but respectful gets results. Flippant, disregarding, and hostile makes you enemies.

I think we agree on the main points. I may be erring on the side of cutting the cops more slack than they deserve.

Officer "git yer ass on da sidewalk" may have meant well, but he still came off looking like a dick because he didn't even make an attempt to de-escalate. Megaphone Cop, by contrast, used his tone of voice to make it clear whether he merely wanted people to clear the road because it makes things safer for everyone, and when he needed people to clear the road because some bozo was using live ammo.

For those following along via F5 instead of watching the livestream, situation has calmed down substantially over the past hour. Media, Amnesty International, and National Lawyers' Guild observers outnumber the locals/protestors in the lot. If everybody else has gone home, that's probably a good thing.

What the f*ck is wrong with these cops? Is there an interest on the part of some cops to CREATE a riot? Are they completely stupid, or should we be investigating a conspiracy?

Sometimes I wonder if some of you are living in the real world and or are aware of how it works. Someone comes at me with a knife from a distance of 20ft or less well then sorry, I'm plugging em with as many .45 rounds as it takes to stop the threat. A knife is a deadly weapon, you don't respond to a threat of deadly force with a lower level of response. No wonder the tv is full of so many idiots espousing so many out of this world ideas of how things should be played out, they are retarded to how things really work.

Tasers, using a baton to smack the hell out of the guy's hand with the knife, pepper spray....

I guess immobilizing somebody is just not as fun as putting them down for good.

He looked like he was on something. Toxicology tests will show he had monster energy and could not be subdued by mere flashlights.

Need to shine them in the suspects eyes longer or move the lights around in little loopy loops to confuse them.

I'm sorry Sir/Mam but running away is not an option some times, especially when it is you the tax payer that is footing the bill for the safety provided under such cirmumstances. It takes about 21 feet to see and understand and then for muscle memory to respond to a threat of someone comming at you with a percieved deadly weapon, such as knife or what have you. For these Officers to have waited untill this guy was closer than 10' speaks volumes about thier state of mind and no matter how you look at it as a law enforcement officer these poor people went above and beyound what they should have regarding thier safety. The tards such as yourself are thinking that this makes no sense, this makes no sense since I could maricauously pull out a tazer, even if one wasnt issued to myself (belive it or not but there are a shat ton of agencies/forces that dont issue these to everyone) and then tazer this individual with 50,000 volts like I was faster then blue lightning!!

Sorry but that is not the real world and those that dont understand it and or take the time to read up on the actual science and documention of such things are fricken retarded when they espouse, well retarded and dumb and frickien stupid responses to said realities.

Funny how the police in other places manage to deal with people wielding knives without killing them. And how they manage to recognize people who are mentally ill and avoid killing them. It's almost as if the police in other places never forget that no matter what the person they're dealing with is just as human as they are.

You can totally die from being tazed, but you have a way better chance of being alive than if you had been shot multiple times from a distance of a few feet.

Not sure what all the surprise is about.  They've already demonstrated a willingness to execute unarmed people, a guy with a knife shouldn't be hard to justify.

Also, if you keep complaining with strong words, they may be forced to disarm you.
