This story was dumb 3 years ago, it's still dumb today.

Dumb but true.

Then again, it made the jump to their cartoon airplanes easier because while planes also have windshields, they don't have headlights.

I'm not an especial fan of the Cars franchise, but this is one choice where I think Pixar was smart. Not only does it give more room for expressiveness, it also  specifically distinguishes their cartoon cars from other cartoon cars.

I like it when someone does something different and creative.

I actually agreed with the premise until I read that article. I always thought the windshield eyes were bad. Then I saw the headlight-eye versions and, nope, the windshield version is better.

TFAuthor got reamed on Jalopnik for this ridiculous argument almost three years ago, and his erroneous viewpoint hasn't gotten any better with age.

Tex Avery knew what he was doing.

I'm still terrified of my desk lamp thanks to Pixar.

Thanks, Pixar.

Absolutely correct. Plus, the distinctiveness gives them a strong copyright claim. They can take imitators (in media, as well as toys) to court more easily since they started the windshield-eyes trend.

The show that ruined cartoon cars for me was Turbo Teen.

Who cares?  They chose awesome automotive references like the Hudson Hornet and Fiat 500.
