I guess it is a little bit safer if Tom Cruise blows up the place.

Tigers in downtown Houston -- the solution to the homeless problem.

There are some pretty good size alligators (12+ feet) that live in the Bayou that runs through downtown and next to this restaurant. But I guess they are safe, because it is their natural habitat.

Ladies and gentlemen, and especially little children. I'm glad you're all here to witness what may very well be my grisly death. Tonight, my most dangerous stunt. I will death-defy both nature and gravity by leaping over this tank of water, filled with man-eating great white sharks, deadly electric eels, ravenous piranha, bone-crushing alligators, and perhaps most frightening of all, the king of the jungle, one ferocious lion!

Will the tigers be naked? Because that would really perk up business.

Damn, I thought I was going to get through that whole website without reading the word, Houston. How embarassing and what a stupid idea.

Houston, I saw, was mentioned twice along with all of the local sports teams, so it was a dead giveaway.

Asshat!

THREAD JACK ALERT: Has anyone heard about the rumor that Texas Governonr Rick Perry was caught having sex with the (male) Texas Secretary of State, and that Mrs. Peryy filed for divorce this past Friday as a result? It's the buzz in Austin today, but I can't find anything on the web. You heard it here first, folks. Bring it.

My wife and I celebrated Valentines by going to the Houston Aquarium. (We're such romantics) The restaraunt is quite spiffy but the actual fishtank-tour is lackluster and far from satisfying. The tigers will be an interesting addition.

One thing that gets me about this is: Where the hell do you get white tiger cubs? It's not like you can just go down to the pound and adopt a rare large cat...

Anyway, as long as they don't harm the tigers and they have as good an environment as any other zoo, why not? And if some rich asshat taunts one of them and gets mauled, I want the video.

Business might turn down a bit though; nothing like watching a huge slab of raw meat being messily devoured to perk up your appetite. Or the expulsion of the waste from the digestion of said meat. And during mating season... (perhaps I'll leave it at that)

Marr says white tigers are temperamental and unpredictable, and should be kept in their natural habitat.

and this is opposed to the regular ole orange stripe-y guys, who are totally predictable, and can be kept anywhere?

The best part of that one is that it's the lion that gets him.

Nishi_Kawaguchi _Style:

Though I know you were being a tad bit saracastic, according to a couple of websites I found, white tigers are merely genetic variations of the more common orange bengal tigers. I am assuming this Marr guy is full of crap. I also assume that all tigers are a bit persnickity.

Here come's the science:

Although popular in some zoos, White Bengal Tigers are extremely rare in the wild - the last sighting of a white tiger in its natural habitat was near Rewa in Central India back in 1951.

From another source:

White tigers differ from the standard orange and black tigers in appearance only. They are characterized by having a creamy white coat with random black/brown stripes, bright blue eyes, and a pink nose. With the exception of these cosmetic differences, the white tiger remains identical in every aspect to the normal color phased tigers. This striking abnormality is caused by a double recessive allele in the genetic code; and only occurs in one out of approximately 10,000 births (in the wild). Oddly, this rare color mutation is only found in the Bengal tiger subspecies in the wild. In captivity, Siberian and Bengal tigers have interbred creating white hybrid tigers.

In May, Texas Gov. Rick Perry signed the Defense of Marriage Act, which denies official recognition to same-sex marriages from other states.

Wow, there are so many Houston Farkers. As a minor threadjack, WTF is up with all the construction in Houston? I live in Bellaire, and for the longest time every entrance to the Loop but Beechnut was closed, and now this madness with 59. Not to mention all the construction to get that death-trap light rail put in.

If you have ever seen the downtown aquarium, you would know that "undignified" is not a qualifier that prevent something being done there. Fertitta seems to get his architecture done by people with crayons.
Also, Perry wasn't going to MARRY him, he just told him that to get into his pants...

2004-02-18 08:54:10 AM
Hey...isn't there already a place with aquariums and tigers?

hmmm...oh yeah, it's called a ZOO!

2004-02-18 08:55:05 AM
OK, who the fark let Seigfried and Roy out of their cage?

And for the Houston Farkers, head south to Kemah and go to the original Aquarium Restaurant on the boardwalk if it's still there. While you're waiting for your table, I recommend the Bamboo Bar right downstairs. (Although the Flying Dutchman was always a much better place to eat). I'm not in Houston anymore, and I'm missing the real food.

2004-02-18 08:58:57 AM
Another Houstonian here
1) Perry - anything to get rid of that helmut hair, aggie, Delay whipping boy.
2) The news story on channel 2 included that white tigers cannont survive in the wild, because their color provides no camoflauge. But I'd like to know what animal can take down a tiger? anyone?
3) Avoid 59 into downtown like the plague. Take the loop around to 288.

The downtown Aquarium, bah

Unless they have strippers riding the tigers, I'm still not going to eat there.

Plus, their reservation system sucks ass

HRpuffinStuff:

OH my GOD... Kemah. I'm from Dallas originally, but we have close family friends in Houston and were there atleast once every 8 weeks. Our friends fav restaurant? The Flying Dutchman. After a Kemah-free life for about 8 years, imagine my surprise when what used to be the FD and a wharf (mid and late 80's mind you) now had an aqarium and a boardwalk and docks for pleasure boats and a mall and a hotel and, like, nine bars... It's like an amusement park now.

All hail Kemah-land!
