I was at a bar in the Baltimore area when during the course of a conversation the sportswriter for the local paper used the "Cal was a selfish player" line. I thought I was going to witness a beating death by mob judging from the intial reaction for the rest of the bar.

2014-08-19 08:44:37 AM
That's a whole bunch of sentences.

How about this one:

"Bud Selig is the best baseball commissioner EVAR!"

2014-08-19 08:44:38 AM
Yawn.

Yeah, that's not a single sentence, that's many sentences, one for each team, in fact, and therefore trolling "every baseball fan" with TFA as your blueprint would require a significant amount of memorization, an activity every bit as dull, boring, and pedantic as baseball itself and the fans who watch it.

Demetrius: That's a whole bunch of sentences.

That does simplify the process greatly.

I've never met a Cardinals fan that didn't proudly proclaim that they have the best fan base in baseball.  I don't think that is going to piss off too many of them.

As a lifelong (going on 4 decades), die-hard O's fan: he ain't wrong. Cal should have - certainly towards the end of the streak - realized that there were more talented players behind him on the depth chart.

Usually you have to go to the Politics tab to find trolls that lame

Because there were so many talented infield prospects that become all stars waiting behind him.

All star voting is a joke. There are, for example, much better AL SS's than Jeter. Hell, JJ Hardy is better, and he ain't even the best.

I'm talking about who was behind Cal when he was being selfish. Name the player or players who were blocked by Cal.

Just off the top of my head, in'96: Surhoff to SS. Zeile to 3B.

Surhoff was drafted by the brewers and Zeile was drafted by the Cards, and both found ample playing time during their O's tenure. Again which two players were directly blocked by Cal. At some point you are going to get to Manny Alexander and you'll know the selfish arguement makes no sense.

In '96 Surhoff was the O's full-time 3B, but he could also play SS. He was a better batter than Cal. Ziele didn't see full-time action for the O's. Making Zeile the full-tim 3B, moving Surhoff to SS and benching Cal would have made more sense.

29 new stadiums, increased attendance, and skyrocketed franchise values say that could be a true statement

Zeile was traded to the O's in 1996 and played loads of games at 3rd.. And arguing that surhoff would have been a slight upgrade over Cal defensively is evidence that Cal was selfish is a joke. You still had his bat in the lineup everyday, so unless you want to argue that surhoff would have saved 4 more runs over Cal is pretty sad.

Cal was the player on those teams and was their leader. Leadership can not be measured

Every franchise except Oakland is in a different building than the one they were in when Selig took over.

Hell, it's actually 30 new stadiums. Atlanta is on their 2nd new one.

Yeah, that's basically the attitude of most of the New Yorkers I met when I lived there. And they don't know what a joke most of them are.

Ah, got me. I'll rephrase: Every team that had one of those crappy circular multipurpose stadiums is in a new building. Fenway has undergone an extensive renovation, and I believe Wrigley and Dodger Stadium are slated to get a similar treatment.

Except, of course, for the White Sox, Blue Jays, Royals, Angels, Dodgers, Cubs and Red Sox, who all currently play in the same building that they did in 1991. And technically, Tropicana Field predates Selig's "acting commissioner" stint, even if the (Devil) Rays do not.

I don't think new stadiums and renovations are really that much a result of Selig.  That's mostly on the team ownership and cities involved.  Odds are, if you are commissioner for over twenty years, you're going to be around during some new stadiums opening up.

True fact: When Fay Vincent was around, he forbid teams from doing any sort of maintenance to their stadiums in any way. And that's why Selig had to get rid of him.

Also I like how future renovations count for Selig, not Manfred.

What would the justification be for that?  I can sort of understand forbidding new stadiums or something, but maintenance/renovations?  That's farked up.
