I preferred the Dead from New York headline attempts. At least I got those ones.

First thing I thought of when I heard the news on the radio!

He'll be missed.

Oh wow. I didn't realize he was that old.

96 is a good run.

2014-08-19 01:26:21 AM
He was the man.

Only two people in history had lifetime contracts with NBC; Bob Hope and Don.

For history's sake, he told America's NBC viewers that JFK had been shot. You can hear it on YouTube buried with all the other coverage.

SNL's season premiere will not be the same. They gotta do what they do, but right now I'm hoping the cold opening is all for Don

Rest in peace, consolation prize man.

RIP. Man, I feel kinda old, he was not young when I first heard him on TV too many years ago to think about.

Also, the very first blooper in SNL history was Don's: October 11, 1975. The very first episode.

Don said, during the opening credits,  "And the Not For Ready Prime Time Players."

2014-08-19 01:46:34 AM
"This is a true story
About a famous criminal
From right around Chicago
This is the story of
Michael Kenyon
A man who's serving time at this very moment
For the crime of armed robbery

It so happened, that at the time of the robbery
Michael, decided to give his female victims
A little enema
Apparently, there was no law against that
But his name lives on
Michael Kenyon
THE ILLINOIS ENEMA BANDIT!"

RIP, Don.

Even though Pardo was known best for SNL, I remember when he was the live announcer (and on-camera) for Channel 4 New York's Live at Five newscast.

So does this death count as the 3rd celebrity to complete this cycle?  Williams, Bacall, Pardo or did I miss one before Williams?

Arlene Martel died last week too. Amongst other things she played Spock's betrothed, T'Pring" in the ST:OS episode "Amok Time".

Oh, the pitiful screams of all those college-educated women.

IIRC, he also did KFOG's "10 at 10" voiceover.  He was awesome.  RIP voiceman.

And someone beat me to the Zappa reference.

Take it away, Don Pardo!

The voice will certainly be missed. Unfortunate to see him go. Dude certainly saw a metric shiat-ton of craziness.

It'll be interesting to see who replaces him. There seems to be a trend of phasing old-school traditional voice-over guys out in favor of Youtube's AsapScience-type voiceovers, which are considerably farking weaker.

I see we've covered the Illinois Enema Bandit. Here's Don Pardo reading the lyrics to I'm the Slime during a Zappa performance on SNL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWoxUvWHtB4

Lots of reminders from a great lifetime in this thread, from 60s game shows to SNL, Zappa and beyond. And the guy was already in his 40s where I picked him up in that first one. I came across him recently on an old clip of NRBQ, introducing the band as they played in some bar. From the late 80s, maybe. What a great, iconic voice.

Wikipedia:

Upon his induction into the Rhode Island Radio Hall of Fame on May 14, 2009, Pardo suggested that the May 16, 2009, episode of Saturday Night Live would be his last.[12]

He did subsequently return for the show's 35th season. Starting with the 36th season, Pardo once again began pre-recording his parts from his home in Arizona instead of performing live in New York City.[11]

Dammit, I really loved the fact that he was still around, and I'm really gonna miss him.

/still watch SNL faithfully
//was very upset when all the old (shortened) episodes were deleted from Netflix

I still remember a great SNL sketch where Jon Lovitz was talking about how great it was to know him and kept screaming about how your life would be better if you got to know him. They brought on Don and he said how he was always behind the scenes and after he got to know Jon he got on TV an he was in the background screaming "IM ON TV NOW!!!"

/Hope he gets a lifetime supply of Rice-A-Roni, its the San Francisco treat!
