His dissatisfaction came to a head following the 2000 election when Jeffords sided with Democrats against the Presidents tax cut plan. "And that is why I have chosen to take the course I'm taking now, to vote with this group," he said.

One of the last of a dying breed of fiscally responsible Republicans/Independents is dead?

*sigh*

RIP.

A moderate Republican?  It's like watching the death of an endangered species.

May 24, 2001, Jim Jeffords did make history with his jump from the Republican Party to becoming an Independent. "Given the changing nature of the national party, it has become a struggle for our leaders to deal with me and for me to deal with them," Jeffords said. The jump cast Jeffords into the national spotlight because it shifted the balance of power in the Senate from the Republicans to the Democrats.

Or as Dubya calls it, "the worst thing that happened to me in my first term"

Sounds like a worthy and good man. Looked out for his state, supporting education and the environment; not a party man.

Given that 9/11 was the best thing possible for Bush, I'll believe it.

i don't remember if he said that exactly but the Republicans were very displeased when he went Independent. It caused them many headaches.

Well at the time, 9/11 hadn't happened yet.

The man was amazing.

When he left the the Republican caucus to join the Democrat caucus, he managed to raise the average IQ of both groups.

That's a clever workaround, but kind of a dick move.

Yeah, no. More like the GOP's collective IQ dropped by double digits.

UNC_Samurai: RIP the only decent human being of The Singing Senators.

↑⇑ THIS!! ⇑↑

He was a pretty decently good singer, yet the only one of the four who was a better Senator than he was a singer. The other three were far and away better singers than they were Senators, and were only about on his level at singing (if even that).
