I rarely take the "shoot em'" position, but the threat to life in this case is clear and present. They should be posting armed soldiers at these clinics, with orders to shoot people attempting to loot or attack them on sight.

Notice the crowd is smiling and cheering.  These people actually believe they are doing the right thing, and they are going to die as a result.  Evil is rarely done out of hate, it is almost always done with good intentions mixed with massive amounts of hubris and ignorance.

Maybe once every family in Liberia watches a family member or friend die of Ebola they will collectively decide it's not a hoax.

2014-08-18 11:12:38 AM
The mattresses and linens are no big deal.  Many people have brought it to my attention that ebola cannot live long outside the human body, and transmission is very difficult.

/yeah.  Ebola worries the crap out of me.

So they don't believe in Ebola, huh? They'll change their minds in a few excruciating weeks. Shame that they'll bring potentially thousands of intelligent people down with them.

Not terrified. Ebola isn't contagious until the victim is obviously sick, and doesn't spread in places that use normal hospital hygiene. If I go to Liberia, I'll decide whether to be mildly apprehensive.

WTF is an ebola clinic doing in the middle of a freaking populated area anyway? And in the middle of a wretched slum? This isn't an oversight, this was intentional. Question this.

Per the article, they looted  bloody sheet and mattresses from the site:
They took off with items - goggles, masks, blood-stained mattresses and blood-stained sheets - that were likely infected with Ebola,

I can't understand this level of crazy/stupid.

Yes, but it will take generations to fully remove mindsets that are rooted in cultural beliefs and they don't really trust the messengers in the first place.

If you are in the first world where basic hygiene is normal, you personally don't have much to worry about. However, the slums in cities in the third world aren't exactly known for their strong hygiene.

This is bad and will likely lead to many more deaths, but there is still little reason to fear serious issues outside of the region.

Well, maybe.  Maybe not.  Were these mattresses cleaned and its a stain?  No threat.  Were they old mattresses that were waiting to be cleaned and have been sitting around in tropical heat for a couple days?  Some threat there.  Were they mattresses with fresh blood?  Major threat.  There is not that much information to go on to say whether the linens are/are not dangerous.

Ebola isn't tough, but it doesn't just fall apart immediately upon contact with air.  In fresh blood absent exposure to sunlight, if the heat doesn't get too obscene the virus can survive for at least several days.

The patients that were, or soon will be, vomiting up blood are a greater potential threat, but I sure as hell wouldn't be touching those sheets without significant PPE or without LOTS of disinfectant.

Are you saying there are a social class of Africans that are comparable to tea party members that have only completed sixth graded?

\Note here, I am not saying all africans, I said a social class.

Pretty much.  Really sucks for the people not involved in the breakout who live there.

When launder my second hand bloody sheets from isolation wards, I clean them with Clorox bleach.

Fleeing ebola patients, not escaped.  Even if you are most likely dying of a disease you will still run from people with knives who are stealing your beds.
