So now buying out dollar stores is all the rage.  It seems they are...bucking a trend.

The real outrage is that of these 3, only Dollar Tree is an actual "dollar" store.

No word on an offer from Dollar Palace? It's the most casual dollar store of them all.

Management in both of those organizations need to stop hiring people who get their MBA's from their own stores.

This is a terrible business move, on several levels.

There is always a fairly constant stream of traffic at our local Family Dollar. They may sell cheap goods, but they sell a lot of them.

It's not all selling for $1, but they've gotten massively popular in rural areas.  They've essentially replaced the country store.  Now that gas is at a price it costs a lot for rural folk to go to Wally World.

One of my favorite thing about visiting the southeast is my little nieces and nephews explaining to me the subtle differences between dollar store, dollar tree, dollar general, family dollar, etc.

sad to say there is a difference.
Family dollar is to be avoided at all costs - their management sucks, they destroyed the chain.
Dollar store is great for picking up things for a scout campout at a low cost.
Dollar Tree often has cheap frozen food that kids like.

This isn't Walmart we're talking about.

Of course they used to be called Dime Stores.

Or am I dating myself here.

That depends -- are you hot enough for yourself?

They should make pass card that automatically take the money out of their welfare checks.

If you think you're going to find anything for a dollar, at Dollar General, think again. Dollar Tree rocks!!!

2014-08-18 04:26:28 PM
You won't find anything at any of these stores for $1 unless it's so crappy even the Chinese would
agree....was this deal financed by Dime Savings Bank?  (A chain of banks from NYC; I don't know
if they still exist, though.)  If it was, they have change coming from their dime.

I must be as "dated" as you.....BTW - in the song "Summer of '69", Bryan Adams mentions buying a
guitar at a five-and-dime....either it was a really cheap guitar or they had a pricing system beyond
5 and 10 cents.....also, do you remember the "Underdog" cartoons?  Some of them mention the
"2 Cent Savings Bank".

I don't see how Dollar Tree gains anything in this purchase. They expanded like hell this last decade and are probably approached peak saturation. Family Dollar sells junk for far more than a dollar so the Dollar Tree can't soak in the merchandise.

I would figure that with each closing Family Dollar, your nearby Dollar Tree just became worth that much more.

Is this like that Office Depot, Office Max, Staples thing?

/went into one of those places a few years back for some Christmas lights that were on sale
//there was a definite aura of fug that hung over the entire place
///everything about that place screamed 'get out quick before you catch something that requires multiple shots to cure'

You know what's really dated? Bryan Adams was only 10 years old in 1969. The name of the song exists only because Adams wanted to get away with saying "69" over and over.

Maybe he was freakishly mature for his age.

Everything at Dollar Tree costs one dollar with a few exceptions that cost less than a dollar . I buy all my junk food there .
