Not News. Osama bin Laden gave a speech back in the day on one of his tapes saying that they would avenge the losing of Andalucia and not allow the "tragedy of Spain" to be repeated in Palestine. Andalucian culture under their local Caliphate was known as something of a Golden Age in Spain, with significant developments in the arts and humanities and sciences among the Muslim, Jewish and Christian populations. It also marked the high water crest of territorial expansion of Islamic political sovereignty in the 15th century.

Why Spain? I mean, besides getting kicked out ruling the place however many hundreds of years ago. I don't see the strategic importance. Besides olive oil, what else does Spain have that they want to control?

Is this just their version of Bush II getting revenge for his Daddy?

Man, fark the Crusades. If you want to go hardcore on the Middle East, take a page out of the Mongolian Empire's playbook. They nearly destroyed that place, and it's only because of politics back home that they ended up being driven out. That region was very, very different before the Mongols came. The Crusades were a joke by comparison.

The Muslims in Spain treated the Jews better than the Christians did. These guys aren't those guys though.
When I hear the whining of the fundies talking about the treatment of some christian sect, i.e. convert or die, unfortunately my people have historical experience with the Church behaving no differently.

Islam was very different back then. There's basically to Islams, one before the Mongolian invasion, the one after it. Before, the Islamic Caliphate was all about enlightenment, culture, science, art. After, not so much.

I would think that would be the conquest of Constantinople. Spain's been in Muslim hands since 700 AD, and was on the verge of being reconquered by Christian kingdoms by the 15th century.

Crewmannumber6: I cannot wait for the middle east to run out of oil

No kidding. I'd like to see one of those "after the humans all disappear" Discovery Channel specials about the middle east, but focused on "after the oil dries up."

I'm picturing roving bands of starving outlaws killing each other with swords in the desert, sort of like Mad Max but with the ruins of Riyadh and Dubai as a background.

Sort of. In this case the offending parties were Ferd and Izzy so the revengement is half a millennium late.

Any territory that was part of Dar al Islam at any point in history, is considered to still be part of Dar al Islam no matter who lives there. It's just occupied by infidels (and thus an affront of Allah) until they take it back.

Or as you said: Just like Bush II.

It's great to have goals, but I'd suggest on them working on getting control of a single country first before focusing too much on conquering the world.

The real estate market there has totally collapsed, they should throw a bunch of fund raisers and just buy up the whole country, basically take it back with the power of gala.

When the Tory Muslims occasionally came to power in Spain, they had wars and enemies everywhere and were certainly fatally mean to the Jews, Christians, and other Muslims.
Things got so bad when the Chirstians took power in Spain, the Pope invited Jews over to the Papal States in Italy for protection.

Agreed, but to be honest, Spain has done a lot of backsliding during the last 600 years too.  For instance, Spain has defaulted on national debt nine times since 1800.  If I were ISIS, I wouldn't want it back.
