They can have some of the ones buzzing the pot grows here. Harvest season brings In all kinds of unsavory characters from both sides of the battle.

Seems like a smart move to get the police out the (figurative and literal) firing line right now. Anything the PD do is likely to stoke further 'anti-police' sentiment, so this might help break up the building narrative.

Good question. I think Nixon's pretty pissed at the local PD right now; they've screwed the pooch six ways from Sunday on this. The Feds need time to do their investigation, and they are NOT going to release anything until they've got a pretty clear idea of what happened.

I think a repeat of Obama's Beer Summit would be more appropriate. Though that was just for an arrest... maybe a Moonshine Meeting?

Does anyone here know the ins and outs how this changes

For  residents
For journalists

Life as normal except trained NG troops on every block and store front?

Laws stay the same etc?

The local PD is also quite likely exhausted from this many hours of solid adrenaline-fueled anxiety. You couldn't expect ANY police force to handle this for two weeks straight. Someone has to relieve them.

fark 'em. I don't know if it's a bunch of insurgents or the citizens of Ferguson causing all the trouble, but enough is enough. That Capt. Johnson from the state police tried to work with everyone and it doesn't seem to have helped much.

So fark 'em. This is a goddamn shame that people can't live in peace. The Governor and the President have offered to arbitrate this dispute...I don't now what more can be done immediately besides institute federal control over the town. What a farking mess. It looks way too much like Gaza.

2014-08-18 04:04:10 AM
As a Stl county resident, about 10 miles from "Ferguson", this is weird. I'm watching and reading about looting and rioting on CNN, and yet, I sit here in my house feeling safe and secure. Last night, I went to White Castle and I ordered 4 cheeseburgers, a cheese fry, and a water. The black guy at the drive-thru was really nice and he handed me a larger cup than one would normally get if you ordered a water. I turned on my dome light, and it was an orange drink. i told him I just wanted water, and he said it was his mistake, and don't worry about it.  I said, "Really? Thank you man. I love you." He laughed. The orange drink was really good.

I think Nixon is reaching for solutions that appease community concerns, not necessarily upset at the police.

"WE DONT TRUST THE LOCAL PD"
*sends in the State PD*
"THIS IS HOW IT'S DONE PEOPLE.  PEACE AND LOVE"
*violence at night, subsequent crackdown*
"WE DONT TRUST THE POLICE"
*sends in the National Guard*

Who are they going to demand next, the President and some additional Armed Forces?

2014-08-18 04:07:18 AM
I'm just totally flabbergasted at how irresponsibly everyone is behaving. Cops, citizens, media, everyone. Nobody is showing restraint and everyone is using the behavior of the others to justify their own. People like me shouldn't be pointing out that others are behaving badly. I practically am the unit of measure by which irresponsibility is measured!

I think the solution is checkpoints at the town limits. Show an ID that proves you're a resident there, or you can go around. That's going to take the out-of-towners who are causing all of the trouble out of the equation.

I'm not sure if there's anything Obama could do right now, other than oversee the orders given to the NG and Federalize immediately if they do anything stupid.

Seems like just a reason to crack down harder really.

I still think this was handled all wrong,  they could've let the people protest while going after the morons that were looting and vandalizing.

The world is getting a good glimpse of the freest nation on earth this week.

Maybe the national guard will be a softer touch,  since their equipment probably isn't as good as the PD's.

I think it's important to note the difference between the National Guard and the rest of the military (of which the Coast Guard is the only given the right to arrest citizens). The standard procedure is to deputize the NG and treat them as the rest of the police force.

In any case, it's not like the Guard has any better equipment than the cops at this point, considering the militarization of American police. What are they going to do, call in an airstrike?

/why the hell would kids be in a protest anyway

Well, then there is that whole thing of them actually being properly trained to use all that military grade equipment.
