Not only was it something that Nintendo didn't have, since it was a digital service, it forced cable companies to clean up their lines which would help when it came to rolling out VOD and internet services.

I'm sorry, but the 32X does not belong there.  That stupid unsupported add on killed Sega as a hardware manufacturer because they pissed off their loyal customers by selling them something they wouldn't release games for.

/I know, they qualified it somewhat, but it still doesn't belong.  That thing was utter crap.

ALL OF Streets of Rage 2, and most of Streets 1 and 3, as well. Streets 3 had this great song, but nobody ever heard it b/c it was late in the game, the part you couldn't get to on Easy difficulty, and that game was way harder than 1 or 2 or Final Fight ever were.

Wait a minute - that picture of the Sonic's spin dash takes place in Green Hill Zone (from then first Sonic the Hedgehog). Sonic wouldn't get the spin dash until Sonic 2! That's a rom hack! Original hardware or GTFO!

Seriously though, I love my Genesis. I was very peculiar about the type I wanted (Model 1 'High Definition Graphics' with no trademark screen) and I was very lucky that I got exactly that. It has the best sound chip and is exactly like the one I had as a kid. I do own a model two for my collection but I mostly have it as a disay piece

The big shame was that Phantasy Star finally became a competitor to SNES RPGs, but Sega canned any future single player, story-driven one because of how PS4 ends.

I remember in the "Genesis does what Nintendon't" commercial, one of the games they showed was Columns. I thought it wasn't exactly the exciting kind of thing you'd want to show off.

Also, I never noticed before in the Ren and Stimpy episode, but the hat that Log is wearing looks like it's giving us the finger:

Our family never had any sega consoles. By the time we were getting into that it was the N64/PS1 era, and nobody in their right mind bought a sega console over one of those two. That said, I have many fond memories of playing genesis games at various friends' houses. As mentioned, the Streets of Rage games were awesome, and the original Sonic games beat the pants off the Mario sidescrollers of the day IMO. However, what really took the cake, and still remains one of my favorite video game experiences of all time, was what happened when you combined third-party controllers with some of the sports games.

There existed controllers with 'turbo' sliders that would alter the functionality of the buttons. In particular, if you slid the slider all the way to the top the controller would send a continuous stream of button presses as if you were jackhammering on the button. When you set up one of the football or hockey games (I forget the titles) with one of these controllers plugged in as player 2 with all of the sliders at the top, the results were absolutely *hysterical*. The controller sent button presses so quickly that it was able to absolutely confuse the pants off of the game, and it led to some ludicrously strange effects.

For example, in the football game one of the buttons was assigned to change the player that was being controlled. With the controller pressing this button a dozen or more times per second, in effect every single opposing player would have the 'controlled' circle under their feet at all times. Combined with the effects of the *other* buttons, this turned every player on the other team into a complete lunatic. One of the other buttons made the controlled player put on a burst of speed, and the controller was able to press it fast enough that the game would wig out and you would get multiple players flying across the field at hyperspeed (far faster than they were supposed to be able to move) randomly in every direction at once. Another button would make the player dive, and the controller pressed it rapidly enough that players would sometimes get stuck in the diving animation and hover across the field. Combined with the previous effect, it was as if some of the players on the other team were channeling some kind of hyperactive ADD superhero, when they weren't tripping over their own shoelaces every step. Yet another button caused defending players to raise their arms to attempt to knock down passes, resulting in players dashing across the field in all directions at hyperspeed flailing their arms in the air like maniacs. Meanwhile, in the hockey game you would get all of the players continually poke-checking in unison, drifting aimlessly across the ice and running into stuff, instantly passing or shooting the puck randomly as soon as they touched it, and punching/poking/fouling every opposing player they brushed against.

Even if it required third part controllers it's still one of the most ridiculous examples of video game glitches I've ever seen, and it was also probably the absolutely funniest video game experience I've ever had.

I really enjoy that style of game, I wish someone was still making them.  FF went downhill with X in my opinion, and I never made it far into 12, I hated the new 'active' battle system, I haven't even bothered with the ones after.

I'd love a 'back to basics' new RPG - give me a strong and compelling story, likable characters, some humor, and a strategy-focused turn based combat system and I'll be happy camper.  I don't need or want something super fast paced where I have to mash a lot of buttons in the correct order quickly just to play the game.
