The family was black. That's pretty much all you need to know.

2014-08-17 02:11:28 PM
It's not like the police had any way to see if there was an open wi-fi connection at the house was there.  I mean, their only option was to kick down the door and throw flash bangs through the windows.  Clearly there was nothing else they could do.

If only the family had a dog for them to shoot.  That would have really showed them.

using the internet to trash-talk

The ostensible reason for the raid was that someone had anonymously posted some internet tough-talk

One of the posts declared: "Cops beware! I'm proud of my country but I hate police of any kind. I have explosives... Made in America. Evansville will feel my pain."

That's a bit more than 'trash-talk'.  That's a pretty straightforward threat.

That said, good grief. Maybe you don't have to go to war All The Time, guys.

If the cops really took that shiat seriously, there would be thousands of right-wing nutters with smashed windows and broken doors to their houses as they're marched past their neighbors in handcuffs. Yet arfcom still has all of its posters.

Unfortunately, the jury in that case can only consider civil damages against the city, instead of jail term for the cops and city officials responsible.

I'd take it seriously, if I were a cop.  I don't think I'd be inclined to just start tossing grenades and breaking shiat as Step Farking One, on the other hand.  I don't know specifically how this department has handled any other similar threats to say whether or not their response is comparably (apparently) bad for all of them, or uniquely (apparently) bad in this case.

It is a bit out of left field to me, too.  And this is the scene I was thinking of above (albeit poorly recorded and not the 'almost kiss' the title indicates)

I dunno.  It made me envision cops ripping off their riot gear and leering at each other, which took me to my happy place.

So, not a fail on all levels.

I particularly like how the cop at 3:25 says "Front door's open.  I'll get it.", and then proceeds to bust out the window with the ram instead of just turning the handle.

If someone puts up threats on the internet saying they've got explosives and guns and want to kill cops, then wouldn't you think it'd be smarter to stake the place out and wait for them to leave before you try arresting them?

Defending the raid, Evansville city attorneys argued the force used to execute the search warrant was "objectively reasonable" and that the police are immune from liability.

Hopefully a jury will find otherwise.

You guys are nuts if you think this is about trash talking the cops.

What this is really about is Comcast trying to get out the message about sharing your wifi.

Same story, different day.  The police think the video "helps their case" because they're doing the kind of stuff they have a reputation for doing.  The chief even calls it a standard, and therefore it's okay.  The police are shielded from liability because they're just following orders.  Throw in a "forbidden speech" crime, and you've got start on a great story about 2014 America.

They "knock" and then the flashbangs go off about 2 seconds later and they break through the unlocked door. What if they surprise you in your own living room and you are holding your tv remote, or holding anything?  You would be dead.

I would think that before storming any house for any reason, responsible LEOs would do a basic inquiry of residence at the house, you know, basic police work in case the occupant has a record and your lulz-we-technically-knocked entry results in the assumed to exist explosives being set off and causing massive casualties to the entire SWAT team.  Or you know, maybe the occupant is an elderly woman who either has an unsecured WiFi router, has a grandson making said threats, or is the victim of a home invasion/take over (anyone seen Funny Games) and you've got a hostage situation on your hands.

No, instead let's just get an IP address and storm the house because we can play COD IRL... lulz unarmed innocent citizens are noobs.

We don't have police forces, we have domestic armies.
Ex combat soldiers with all the same gear they had before.
The mentality is still there and a few weeks of police training isn't going to change that.
The experiences of combat training, the endless drills and actual combat can't be unlearned. It is with us forever. It may fade but it is always there.

We are the last people that should be given a badge and a gun.

We did something similar as a senior prank.  We set up 6 access points, 'terrorist training center' 1-5, and 7.  Then we set them loose in the school.  The FBI went crazy looking for number 6!  Best senior year ever.

Trolltastic headline is trolltastic. The police swat team was responding to an online threat against the department, a threat that involved explosives. The IP address was correct, and they had no way of knowing the scumbag neighbor had used the open wifi to post threats. The entry was fast and well done, and they managed to do it without killing anyone in the house. The fact that someone was using the wifi other than the occupants of the house is moot. If anyone is an asshole here, it's the idiot who threatened the cops on someone else's connection. If he had in fact LIVED there, this would be a non story. i really see no problem with the way they took care of it. If you post threats against the police to use explosives on them, i really can't imagine a much different response. Feel sorry for the old lady and little kid, but that's not the police's fault. But this is fark, so everything is the cops fault, even if they do their jobs right. Because derp.

What the hell are you talking about?

Oh, you mean the radical groups from almost 40 years ago.  You had to go back that far to find liberal bombers.  Can you think of any more recent bombing?  Say... something in Oklahoma?  Or a large sporting event in Atlanta?  Or several abortion clinics across the US?  No, can't think of any?  If you did, I wonder if those were done by liberals too.

Good ol' Evansville. The go-to "big city" town in SW Indiana.  Not surprised at all with the way the SWAT team acted down there.

Then again, when there's nothing to do but smoke meth, watch basketball, and go to the mall, well...
