It isn't affordable if you are over 50.  My non smoking premium was $940 a month (if I smoked, it was over $1100) and the least expensive policy was saddled with a $12,600 deductible (no co pay) - and no subsidy.

Sorry, charlie, but it was anything but affordable.

/and the best advice I got was to take a cut in pay to get a subsidy?  Madness.

For a 56 year old (just threw in a random age over 50) in FL making $100,000/year (so no subsidies) the cost ranges from $360/month for a Bronze plan to $650/month for a Platinum.

As I recall, he conveniently makes, like, a dollar more than the maximum to qualify for a subsidy.

Just wen through this in MA. Under $1000/mo for a family of three, no deductible. Prescription is a little higher than what I had before but we got to keep our doctors. My employer gives us a monthly stipend to buy whatever insurance we want which keeps my cost rather low.

Yeah, we're going to need state and county of residence, and ages for all the people you're getting coverage for.  You do realize that it would be absurd for anyone to take your word for it when the people can just look up the actual numbers, right?

IIRC, he lives in an area of Mississippi that has exactly one company selling insurance plans. Conveniently, this area happens to have the highest insurance costs in the nation as a result of poor health and lack of competition. Of course, he also happens to be extremely wealthy for the area since he makes just a few bucks above the maximum amount that qualifies one for a premium tax credit and the rest of the ZIP code is mired in poverty.

Even if he was 100% accurate on the cost of numbers (I'm horribly naive), wouldn't he have to make over 100,000 a year to not qualify for ANY subsidy?

He's said previously that three insurance is for three people, which would put the maximum income at $78,120. He's also previously said that he estimated making something like five bucks over that maximum.
