Well you're going to see a little of that when you're fighting two comic book movies with yet another movie with actors most teenagers never heard of or care about and make it a PG-13 to turn off the adults.

Anyone else seen the new GotG ad running that takes a shot at the turtles? I don't remember that line from the movie.

---Expendables 3, should never had been a PG-13 movie.  This movie should be a proper hard R movie.  It is made for people over 17, those teen / young adults are the youngest that are going to remember and want to see the old guys.  Besides us regular old guys that frequent FARK.

basemetal: This has to be the worst summer I can remember as far as quality of movies go.

Agreed. The only movie that movie  worthy of watching in a theater for me was Guardians of the Galaxy. Everything else was wait until the DVD.  I can't recall the last summer I felt like that. Is it me or has all the quality writing shifted to television? I am now excited for the start of the new Fall television season like I was for the Summer movies seasons of the past.

On a different note, did anyone go see The Giver? I read the book and I liked it. Saw the trailers and knew that they had butchered it from the little I saw. (For one thing, the lead is supposed to be twelve and not eighteen. And there is no central villain in the book unlike the movie.) If you watched it was it actually good or bad?

2014-08-17 04:17:21 PM
The Expendables was terrible.  I kinda liked the first one in a 'things blow up' kinda way, but I regret that now.  For some reason these movies insist on dialog.  Antonio Banderas was tolerable, Mel Gibson was the only one who could deliver lines.  The rest, especially Stallone, were so bad.

It felt really disjointed, spend a scene in this country or that city and move on.  They even introduced Chekov's gun as the XM-25 but I can't remember if they even used it besides at the firing range.

The action was OK, but should have been better.  Stallone sneaking around killing guards with a silenced m4 or something, then randomly throws a frickin machete into a guard, then goes back to shooting them.  The complete ineptitude of the 'bad guys' in every conceivable way.   I guess if the Azmanistan army has a dirtbike corp. they'd want to use em, so why not send them into the dilapidated building.  I honestly can't think of a part of the action shots that stood out as being good.

For the sake of your sanity, only see this in one of two ways:
1.  Rifftrax
2.  Some talented video editor taking out the stupid melodramatic monologues and making the expendables appear to be some evil crew of mass murderers

2014-08-17 04:29:13 PM

mekki: Is it me or has all the quality writing shifted to television?

I think the foreign market, especially China, is so important now that they're writing movies aimed at people who don't speak English as a first language.

2014-08-17 04:29:20 PM

SilentStrider: Shame. Expendables was good.

I heard that, but honestly if it took three movies to push past mediocre and work out the basic 'young guys fark up, old guys come back for one last job' formula then the people making the damned things deserve to have it bomb for their stupidity alone.

mekki: The only movie that movie  worthy of watching in a theater for me was Guardians of the Galaxy. Everything else was wait until the DVD.  I can't recall the last summer I felt like that. Is it me or has all the quality writing shifted to television?

Planet of the Apes was a good action movie, as was Captain America.  I think X-men was running into summer as well, and it was a'ight.

Stepping outside of the action genre for a bit, How to Train Your Dragon (2) was good, and 22 Jump Street was fun and silly and Noah fun and campy.

So... one really good movie, two good movies, and a middling decent movie in the action entry, and a really good movie and two pretty good movies that might not be your speed genre-wise.  Honestly, that's about as good as summer usually is.  People overstate the relative strength of the season, especially now that a bunch of studios have decided to run a lot of their properties earlier in the year since the foreign releases were stealing like an entire fiscal quarter's worth of cash.

// I also liked Earth to Echo but that was more nostalgia stuff than quality as such.

Plus it's been well ahead of The Winter Soldier in terms of daily box office and made $200 million in two week. Guardians will easily be #1 for the year, at least until Mockingjay debuts in November.

Beerguy: I still say that Hercules was the movie that got overlooked this Summer.

Hercules? Are you serious?! What a waste of a character.

The most interesting thing about Hercules are the trials he had to do and what do they do in this stupid unoriginal movie? They show one or two in quickly edited music video flashbacks only.

Boring, uninteresting Direct-To-Video quality film. It could have easily been made by Asylum/ SyFy if they had a bigger budget - actually, no, they would have done a better job because they would have went for the over-the-top ridiculousness instead of stale predictability.

Probably a more interesting take, if less budgeted and without The Rock in a lion head-dress:

The first one was released to no competition, but Catching Fire released less than a week before Frozen, and still managed to beat it during the Thanksgiving weekend. This year, the Thanksgiving competition seems a lot lighter, but that is probably because movies like Interstellar and Big Hero 6 moved to early November to get out of the way of the Hunger Games juggernaut.

I saw it last night.  It wasn't great and wasn't terrible, but wasn't spoiled by the trailer either.  There were a few good one-liners, and it checks off a lot of the cliches for both the "buddy cop" and "fish out of water" genres.  It will probably be in heavy rotation on basic cable within a few years.

Hollywood reality: You can have a 12-year-old protagonist in a book, you can't have a (successful) movie with one (all movies are not Harry Potter).  AND, most of the time, 12-year-old protagonists act like grown ups in books (that's appeal to younger readers), and that often comes off bad in a movie.

FTA: "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles grabbed the No. 1 crown again in its second weekend with an expected $28M+ gross (down about 58% which was a better than expected hold)."

58% is within the average threshold for a first-to-second weekend drop. Not horrible by any stretch.

Plus, if you hire an 18-year old, you don't have to pay for an on-set tutor, and you don't have limits on how long they can work per day.

I don't really mind TMNT doing well. Like the new Transformers movies, it's not for me as I don't want to see my childhood manhandled. That said, it's a popular franchise and Bay is involved, so it wasn't going to bomb.

The interesting thing is that GotG is still doing well with the only known quantity about it is that it is a Marvel movie. That's it. They made a successful movie about characters nobody knew anything about.

I don't know, after seeing Guardians, it felt like something I could have waited until it popped up on Netflix to watch.  Amusing, but definitely not worth the ticket price.
