Did anyone else initially read the headline as, the cop and the former baby were getting married?

these were the days when cops got crappy pay, but didn't beat up or shoot everything that moved.

Seriously, the better the equipment, and the better the pay, the worse they get.

That is a beautiful story.

I wish more police officers were like this guy.

/ Should have gone with the Hero tag on this one, subby.

My wife saved a toddler's life at a picnic next to a lake (drowning, CPR etc). She didn't even get a thank-you. I plan to be at that wedding as well, but with a large well lubricated rubber chicken.
I'll be ordering copies of the wedding photos.

I was thinking of Sin City, does that count?

OTOH, maybe today's approach of tasering the non-compliant baby could have jump started her heart, too.

Has cop pay improved in the past 20+ years? Or has it been stagnant like all other jobs? The lower the pay the more likely you are to end up with cops that get other 'rewards' (such as the chance to bully anyone they want) from the job. The higher end military equipment also attracts that type. I think the problem is that the police department money went from paying good cops well, to paying bad cops poorly and supplying them with toys

You, sir, are spot-on.

My great-uncle was raised in the era when police were a part of the community they patrolled. Think of a white version of Hightower from the Police Academy movies. Even when out of uniform, you couldn't help but say 'Yes, sir" around him. Yet, he was friendly and fair-minded, and made a point of getting on a first-name basis with all his neighbors and the people on his patrol. And he lived and patrolled in predominately black neighborhoods.

IIRC, he ended up leaving the department (or was fired) over disagreements with the way the department handled relations with the black communities during the late 60s / early 70s. He instead joined the fire department, where he remained until his retirement.

The funeral home where his memorial service was held, was packed full with his friends, family, and neighbors. One of the greatest men I've ever known.
