No, the best present of all would be Moffat leaving.

Even if you're only considering NuWho I think Billie Piper's tenure was longer than Coleman's. Or maybe it just felt that way...

I like her because she pretty much kicked ass without being the Doctor's star-crossed love interest (Rose), the mother of his girlfriend (Amy), or the most specialist girl in the world (Clara).  She had a certain steely will to just do whatever needed to be done whether the Doctor approved of it or not that made her stand out.

Clara is stoic.
I don't remember that character.

Ooohhh, yes.
Well she is a beard
Clara Oswald, well she was, ...
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ummm ... stern?

I liked Clara much more than Amy.  She whined less and the actors had much better chemistry.

Rory was a companion for thousands of years. Sure he didn't keep the best company for most of that time. Still counts.

came here to say THIS !!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Companion_(Doctor_Who)

but Amy then Rory then Sarah
but it also depends on what you are counting ...
seasons? episodes ...
should it count when the character is in an episode, but didnt specifically travel with him?  (rose appears here and there talking to donna)

I have to say, I have greatly enjoyed most/all of the new companions, in different ways, at different times.
Donna was fantastic as a STRONG, no nonsense companion.
Rose was awesome, because, well, she was the first new companion ....
Martha was awesome as a med student, weak in the middle, amazing in the end of time.
Amy - please, redhead, Scottish, hawt, the girl that waited ...
Clara has been fun and odd and different and odd which is a nice change.

Do we count Romana as 18 for the named Character or 12 and 6 for the different actresses that played her?

THIS. Rose was cool, Martha was awesome, Donna was fun, Amy was... unavailable, and Clara was... on the show for like 6 episodes? I always thought she was a storyline that would lead somewhere. I don't think it's weird she's leaving, though it does feel like she never settled into the role.

I believe that the Brigadier would like to have a word on long standing companions.

By several measures, Sarah Jane.
By number of stories, Amy.
The Brig and Jo's tenures are the longest in calendar years when spin-off series are included. (Both appeared before Sarah Jane, though all three made their last appearances on  SJA.)

I count the Mirror as the least credible of the dodgy British tabloids. Their last breaking Doctor Who story was the supposed recovery of the long-lost Marco Polo serial. That was the better part of a year ago, and if it has been found, the Beeb's keeping it far closer to the vest than the last batch of recovered episodes. I'm hoping Coleman sticks around a little longer, just so Moff can finally develop Clara thoroughly instead of having her as the impossible-girl-Amy-surrogate she was in the bottom of season 7.

I don't hate Clara but she's pretty underwhelming.  Also the whole "impossible girl" thing was extremely bleh.

That being said, now that we have a Scottish Doctor who will actually be using his own Scottish accent, a Scottish companion would be nicely appreciated.  I nominate the recently-freed-from-GoT Rose Leslie.

Apparently. I guess I'll never understand the way some fans for different things get into these little rages over shiat like that. It's obviously not just Doctor Who, but it's a good example of how some fans get so butthurt about shiat. "This new Doctor sucks, I hate him!" "I love the new Doctor!" "This companion is horrible, I hate her!" "OMG the Doctor's companion is awesome!"

Yeah, that was more Donna than Martha. Martha spent most of her season pining for the Doctor while he remained totally oblivious to the whole thing. I liked Martha much better after her run as a companion. But the actress that played Martha was arguably the hottest of the bunch for the new companions.

Various Star Trek shows. Who and Trek have the absolute worst fans IMO. You get so many fans that get butthurt because something doesn't agree with how they think it should be and all they do is biatch and moan about the show, but they keep on watching. I'll grant you that Trek is a bit of an old example since there is no Trek on TV anymore though.

Clara was damn cute. Her character was pretty boring though. By creating a character effectively without a history, Moffat made a companion that was much closer to Classic Who companions. Us older fans thought that was what we wanted but nobody seemed to like the end result very much.

I've seen that leaked copy of the first episode of the eighth season and she finally gets to do a bit of acting, so that was nice. She's very freaked out and suspicious of the regeneration.  I think we're going to see her as a cross between Peri and Tegan now. She's got to deal with this new guy that she doesn't really trust any more. I'll bet she leaves because she can't deal with the strangeness of the new Doctor. At least, that's how I hope it goes down.

/ She's done her time on the show, time to move on and wind up signing at cons in a few years.

This is anything BUT spiffy, subby. Clara Oswald is no Amy Pond, that much is true, but that's primarily because she has been woefully underwritten almost from her very first appearance-which is a damn shame. She's the Caucasian version of Martha Jones, essentially(who, for the record, is the most alluring-and resourceful-NuWho companion). Ah, well.

No! I really liked Clara. There was just something about her that I could ever put my finger on but she just always seemed like such a great companion to me. This sucks!

2014-08-17 03:25:16 AM
I thought Clara was going to be a more dynamic character based on her first appearance in Asylum of the Daleks. She was witty, smart, flirty, and always tries to be happy despite horrible things happening. But then we find out she's a Dalek. Even her character as the Victorian era bar maid was interesting. Then when we get introduced to her again...she's dull, has no ambition, kinda clueless, and was only made smart because of a technology hand wave. The impossible girl story arc was really not that interesting and mostly because Clara had no clue most of the time except why is the Doctor so weird around me. And then in the end, having the Doctor apparently not die on Trenzalore seems to negate Clara being thrown back through the Doctor's life.

Overall, she's been a fine companion but has never really stood out.

Also, where has all this hate for Clara and Moffet come from?

Well Ron D. Moore proposed something darker for Voyager and when the Trek heads didn't go for it he jumped ship and took all of his ideas for Battlestar Galactica.

That said some new Trek would be cool gritty or otherwise.

Voyager's "Year of Hell" got it right, for the most part. Of course that all ended with the Reset Button.

Star Trek is too expensive to make today. Back when media was more consolidated it could work - but a big space based show just costs too much to do in an environment where people's viewing habits are more dispersed. While SyFy is making The Expanse - it's a gamble as to whether or not it can be made in a way that pays the bills.

Fanboys make episodes with better special effects and scripts than the actual shows.
