Spain produces around half the world's olives and is the number one producer of olive oil.

What are things I didn't know because I'm a dumbass but find vaguely interesting for $200, Alex?

That reminds me of a shop that was near my old house.  I assume it must have been some sort of money laundering operation because it was a little 3-aisle store that only stocked bizarre, upscale stuff.  (Well, that and good wine and their deli was pretty good.)  But their regular stock was so eclectic that I don't know how they could possibly sell enough of it to make a profit.  How many people are out there buying sunflower oil and boar pate?

Nope. Olive oils comes from all over the place. So, no, the Mafia doesn't control them. Personally, I favor olive oils that come from Spain. You can keep your Italian olive oil.

I took a couple drives thruough the central valley this year and thousands of acres of new olive trees were being put in, replacing whatever groves were there for years already. In a major drought no less.

You know who has the real deal stuff when it comes to olive oil? Costco.
Try it side by side with Bertolli, Pompeian or Caravelli. You can taste it right off. Costco (kirkland?) is better than all those.

The price of the Kirkland olive oil is a steal. Are there any avacado oil fans out there? I could drink that stuff straight from the bottle.

Coconut oil for cooking (though not much cheaper) and as for salad dressing -- just go straight balsamic vinegar.

Screw that hydrogenated oils crap.

Sorry. I wasn't in my happy place. Try this; Pour a few ounces of several different oils into small bowls, dip slices of fresh baguette into the oils and enjoy. When you understand the differences in flavor, let's talk about cooking temperature.

People told me that about tomatoes, so I bought some a couple weeks ago at the prime of the season to taste them versus the ones I got at the grocery the same day.  I couldn't really find much difference.  The ones from the grocery were a little firmer, taste seemed about the same.
