Bacon is the star of a bacon sandwich.  Tomato is the star of a tomato sandwich.  A BLT is glorious because the acidity, coolness and softness of the tomato interacts with the meatiness, saltiness and greasiness of the bacon.  It is a pas-de-deux of flavour and texture.

The lettuce is, of course, completely unnecessary.

2014-08-16 01:28:05 PM
The only thing tomato has going for it is that it is seasonal. If you could get good tomatoes year round, no one would care about them either.

Vimes carefully lifted the top of the bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich and smiled inwardly. Good old Cheery. She knew what a Vimes BLT was all about. It was about having to lift up quite a lot of crispy bacon before you found the miserable skulking vegetables. You might never notice them at all. ...

... "I'm sure you intend to, Sam, but you look like a horrible warning," said Sybil. "When did you last eat?"
"I had a lettuce, tomato, and bacon sandwich, dear," he said, endeavouring by tone of voice to suggest that the bacon had been a mere condiment rather than a slab barely covered by the bread. ...

Mayo. That's more necessary than the lettuce.

You ain't from the South.

There is nothing better than a homegrown tomato, fresh from the garden, sliced up and piled high between two pieces of white bread with mayo, pepper, some celery seed, a little salt, and glass of sweet tea.

/book it, done.

Big leaves of basil. Lots of. Basil. Like lettuce, but basil. Salt. Pepper. Mozz cheese. Thick slices of tomato.

Lettuce is too bland. I prefer a bacon, tomato, and kale sandwich: the BTK.
