One of the biggest reasons I chose to be straight is that straight people never do anything irresponsible or risky.

I once pet a cat. I clearly can't donate my organs because they are demon spawned Hell beasts.

You can't donate blood plasma if you're gay, either. The risk of AIDS and Hep C. are too great. This is not discrimination based on sexual identity; This is donor selection based on the likelihood of diseases that can easily be spread by contact with blood.

clancifer: SauronWasFramed: because every organ recipient should be exposed to potential diseases caused by irresponsible and risky behaviors by the donor

Straight people actually aren't as likely to have Hep C, HIV, or AIDS... And these are the diseases they're screening for.

And before you call me a bigot, just know that would be a silly thing to say. You don't know me, and I'm not about to talk about my friends and sexual orientation, but suffice it to say I'm an advocate of the LGBT community and have fought for civil rights in that regard.

However, there's a difference between allowing same-gender couples to marry and allowing the studs who play the field in the gay community to donate an organ or blood plasma. There IS risk involved in their behavior. They accept this and know it. The whole community knows it. How could the gay community NOT know (all-too-well!) that AIDS nearly destroyed them and that Hep C is a real danger?

For the record, this isn't just about gay men. If they can determine that a woman is a prostitute, they won't accept donations from her, either. They won't accept donations from people who have traveled to certain countries, people with multiple tattoos, or people who are confirmed heroin users either. This isn't about dislike of gay people-- This is about screening for risks and being thorough when trying NOT to give someone HIV, AIDS, or Hep C, to name a few diseases that are transferred this way. Anal sex, needles, and certain insects all transfer these diseases easily.

It's WONDERFUL that her son wanted to donate. It's altruistic, sweet, and noble. But that doesn't change the fact that, if he was sexually active, there was some  risk of the aforementioned diseases being present and being passed on to the recipient. They can't spend time treating and testing organs to make sure nothing develops before transplant. They need to be trustworthy organs at the moment the donor dies, and while they COULD test and treat the organs, the simpler solution when they detect a risk factor-- however slim-- is to simply reject the donation.

Slate is being disingenuous about this story. It's not about "hating the gays" -- It's about simple scientific, medical processes that are in place to protect doctors and patients. It's about streamlining the donor process, too. It's not homophobia.

It certain is discrimination based on sexual identity if it's about your, you know, sexual identity.  As has already been pointed out in this thread, the appropriate question is not "Are you gay?" but "Have you had unprotected sex with another male within the past N months?" for some value of N.

Granted, that the teen in question is dead makes it a rather difficult question to answer, but the principle remains.

Additionally, it should go without saying that one can be both a virgin and gay, just as much as one can be both heterosexual and gay.  But of course this is Fark, where nothing goes without saying.

I meant both "heterosexual and a virgin."  Bad idea to Fark on little sleep.
