I rode the hell outta that when I was a kid, the dual track made you feel like you were racing.

Plus,

We will always be able to see it in "KISS Meets The Phantom Of The Park".

Well to be honest, it's outdated and getting a bit too inquisitive.

My sex life is like a roller coaster: there's screaming and nausea and everyone looks terrified in the photos.

And they'd run one of the two tracks backwards at times.  One of the many great things of growing up in SoCal.

Can you *imagine* how wrongly most Farkers would answer such a question?

I haz a sad.  Used to be a blast riding that backwards, the backwards line was always at least twice as long as the forward one.

So long Colossus, I'll remember you fondly.

I love wooden rollercoasters. Kennywood Park (in Pgh) has three and they're all historic landmarks. Never got to ride the Colossus, why are they tearing it down?

I'd guess it has to do with maintenance costs, since that's why they're also tearing down SFNE's wooden coaster.  (Yes, Six Flags is tearing down two wooden roller coasters at the same time.)

It's a Shadow of itself.

Nooooo! I loved that coaster. When I worked at Magic Mountain I would show up early for my shift or stay late and ride Batman and Colossus over and over.

Carowinds has a wooden dual track coaster where one runs backward all the time.

And it's not in southern California.

Glad I got to ride it a few weeks ago. They were already tearing out one set of tracks so it felt like it was already decommissioned.

Sadly, no. Worse, his swollen nose was better by the time we went back.

Feeling very nostalgic about Magic Mountain over this, maybe they should have free knife night or something so you can shiv someone for wearing the "wrong" colors.....you know for old times sake

One of the greats. I remember the entrance was in a weird corner of the park pretty far from any other major ride, and most people didn't bother to go that far to get to it. But man, if you were 6' or taller, you were scared shiat less b/c the later portions were claustrophobic as hell. I would raise my arms up for the first big drop, but then after that you would duck down, scared to death you would get decapitated when it went under the major superstructure.

Also, Six Flags won't say exactly why they're shutting it down. I guess they want to reveal the new ride/redone ride w/ a big event or something. Odds say they'll just completely replace the steel track, which is the worst part of the maintenance. Others say it won't be wooden at all anymore (they had too many problems w/ Psyclone, the Coney Island copy).

Not the best woodie by any measure these days, but the first drop was breathtaking. Also looking down coming around the curve and seeing the permanent fire nozzle on the ground was kind of cool. At least they never had to use it to my knowledge. It is kind of sad to see an old ride go, but as always with SF I am looking forward to seeing what will be put in its place. I've always wondered why they take old rides out of this park instead of expanding the park. There's plenty of open space surrounding the park still. Would be good if they grabbed it before it gets covered with McHouses.

Only regret: Never got to experience the backwards ride...

My only question: Where are they going to put the giant black widow spider during the Halloween season?

Coaster fans call these "headchoppers." They are one of the things that makes a good woodie a great woodie!

(they had too many problems w/ Psyclone, the Coney Island copy)

I heard that Psyclone wasn't too bad a ride until the 1994 Northridge earthquake. The quake tweaked it up pretty bad and they never could smooth it out again. I didn't ride it until a year after that quake. Yes, it was pretty rough but probably not as bad as Knott's Ghost Rider was the last time I rode it about 2 years ago.

Six Flags Over Texas just retrofit one of their old sodden coasters with steel tracks. Holy crap. That is awesome.... All the airtime and hard cornets of a wooden coaster with the smoothness of steel.

Awesome.
