This is not heroism.
This is what should have been done all along.

Hero tags all around (except the previous PD). After what happened two nights ago it took a lot of trust for both sides to de-escalate.

It is what should have been done in the first place but was not. I hope that entire police force is never allowed to carry a badge (even a fake TSA one).

He's not the police chief. He's just a captain from the Missouri Highway Patrol who was appointed to oversee police response for a short time.

Tom Jackson is still the police chief.

He's not the one in control of the riot police - it's the St. Louis County Police under Jon Belmar.

Indeed. One commands an officer that set up Ferguson for Bull Connor 2: Electric Boogaloo, and the other is a guy who commands officers who redeemed this state in the eyes of the country.

Hero is well deserved.

That would be nice.  What should be done is there should be a complete audit of that departments policies and procedures by an outside, independent agency, along with a complete review of every action taken by every single officer involved in this fiasco and criminal charges filed against anyone found to have violated the citizens civil rights or acted with unnecessary force.

What will happen? (imho)  "Heck of a job, Brownie."

Don't discount the fact that the victim's family as well as Obama both condemned violence and a lot of the protesters didn't want violence or looting in the first place.

2014-08-15 11:48:47 AM
This is too bad honestly.  People need to get a real eyefull of what the militarized police state really looks like and does before they get acclimated enough to accept it.  Defusing the situation now actually hurts us in the long run, in my eyes.

Hopefully this can be the new Birmingham protests anyway, but I'm worried it's done for now and people will forget again because Robin Williams died and OH NO.

So I suppose we will have to wait for when the courts slap the wrist of the cop who killed the thief for the riots to continue.

My guess on this (from what we know so far) is that this is not going to be a fun trial, if there is one (and there should be). It'd be hard to make murder stick to him. Probably manslaughter. If he did indeed try and wrestle the gun away from the officer, that's bad, but when he ran away, he was unarmed.

The case is only a few days old, simmer down over there. If you choose not to believe, fine, keep your head in the sand. The kid was a thug, cops shot him. As I said, I only wish the cops had lapel cameras.

I have no love for thugs or crooked cops

Even if you completely buy the police account of events, why should you be surprised that the riots took place? As multiple people who have worked with area law enforcement have said, this town was a powder keg. You don't get riots like that based off of one incident of perceived abuse of police power - they come from years of tension and mistrust between authorities and the community.
