I'm all for conservation and proper use of resources, but really, what a douche.

Oh, ffs. Donations to ALS research have improved by 1000%. The buckets of water and ice are nothing compared to that. Wake me up if the "waste" of water reaches a point where it actually makes a difference. And, yes, I'm a damn treehugger.

That's great but I wonder how many will repeat their donations next year? Hopefully, it will be more than half.

Yeah, this.  This is nickel and dime shiat compared to the energy and resources that get frittered away every day in so very many other ways.

I think the people who do hash tag challenges are not going to be bright enough to understand the issue.  Or any issue.

So, instead of wasting several gallons of cold water and shouting out your non- achievement from the rooftop, I have a better idea. There are plenty of organizations in this country that need your time, attention and charity. I'm cutting the Foundation my own $100 check, without the false pretext and self- congratulation. I challenge you to do the same.

Except for this smarmy, self-congratulatory, holier-than-thou article you just wrote.

Yeah, it's getting damn annoying. A better article about it and other "good cause, gotta do it" fads such as Livestrong bracelets, #Haiti, #BringBackOurGirls, #Kony2012, etc.

http://www.vice.com/read/dumping-a-bucket-of-ice-on-your-head-does-n ot -make-you-a-philanthropist-813

None of this does any good. People in Haiti are still living in tents being raped, the kidnapped girls in Nigeria were NOT brought back. The government basically gave up on them and said they wouldn't be rescued and everyone in the western world forgot about them and moved on to the ice bucket challenge. #Kony2012 led to a guy jerkin it in San Diego, and we all know how the Lance Armstrong saga ended. Stop dumping ice water on your head, just donate money. Come to think of it I don't even trust that. Charities use it on new furniture, re-decorating their offices, their salaries, advertising, etc.

that column was pretty annoying, but maybe an alternate challenge might be a better idea for places currently suffering from massive droughts (like say california.) It does seem a little odd to deplete aquifers to do a stunt to raise money for charity

I know that donations have gone up, which is good thing, but the whole pretext of the "challenge" doesn't make sense. As I understand it, challenge someone to dump ice water on their head OR donate $100. So if one attention whore douses himself in ice water and challenges his 3 attention whore friends, and they all do it...under the rules of the game you get 4 internet videos and ZERO dollars donated.

Right?

Stop doing the Ice Bucket Challenge. It's an insult to third world countries, or something like that

You know what's an insult to third world countries?  Breathing freedom.  And I am not going to stop.  You know who can make me stop?  Not a third world country, that's who.  USA!  USA!

Yep. My grandfather and my cousin in law both died of ALS. It's a horrible thing. I was too young to know my grandfather at the time but my cousin in law kept in high spirits and would have loved this. He can go call it a waste and an insult when he thinks of a better way to raise that kind of money.

No. You're supposed to donate $10 if you do the ice bucket. So that would be $40 donated, assuming that none of them do the $100.

"I'm cutting the Foundation my own $100 check, without the false pretext and self- congratulation.."

You mean like the false pretext of a whole article about how everyone else sucks and you don't?  And then this climax of self-congratulation at the end?

Bringing clean water to parts of the world that don't have it has been my vocation and avocation for 25 years.  The ice bucket challenge, as silly as it is, will have no impact whatsoever on any water issue.

In other news, everyone should stop exercising because it's insensitive to people who HAVE to do physical labor to survive and aren't just doing it on a lark for their "health" or whatever. Oh and it makes them eat more, which is insensitive to starving people.

Also we shouldn't be posting videos of anything online because it's insensitive to those without broadband.

Etc. etc. ad infinitum
