(Ars Technica)   Because so many associate the name "Internet Explorer" with buggy, bloated software, Microsoft considers renaming it. Subby suggests "Gremlin," but has never been a marketing guru. Anyone have a better suggestion?   (arstechnica.com) divider line 156

You have to use IE because some idiot programmed a critical vertical application targeted to IE6 thirteen years ago and the company's moneywankers don't have the desire to give our current coders the resources and time to either rebuild it correctly or find a proper 3rd party application to replace it.

That, and for all their efforts, keeping Firefox up to date for 400+ users is still a much bigger PITA than keeping IE updated through WSUS.

Don't blame me, I'd rather not use it myself.

While I personally hate IE, as the network administrator for a school district I'm forced to support three separate browsers. Until this summer, the majority of systems in the district were Windows XP. We could not get the funding to upgrade anything for the longest time. Having it no longer supported by MS was finally enough to get everything replaced with Windows 7 machines. But during the last few years I was forced to support multiple browsers because one browser simply does not do everything you need it to do. And being on XP limited us to IE 8. Google Apps for Education stopped supporting Chrome Frame for IE. We had to use IE for the Student Information System which kept telling us they "hadn't worked out all the bugs in their system for using Firefox and Chrome."  One browser worked with one thing, the other browser didn't, or vendors would only support one and not the other. It was a damn nightmare. And of course the people making the decisions on which vendors to go with and which software to use DON'T LISTEN when you tell them it won't work. They just dismiss it and say "Oh come on, you'll figure out a way." One woman, who just before retiring as a director of a department, signed another 5 year contract with a rinky-dink software vendor that can only be used with IE because her son was employed by them.

And it isn't just municipalities, sadly. My wife works for a very large, very well known tech giant (not MS) and even she is forced to use a ticketing system that MUST be accessed using IE. I think it might even be IE 7, in fact. I believe it is Siebel based-- and as I understand it (could be wrong) they've only recently started to attempt support for other browsers aside from IE.  So it isn't exactly a simple issue.

Several releases is being kind, it's been over 8 years since IE6 was replaced. Once IE9 came out, Firefox was uninstalled for good.

Ugh. Hopefully they don't start trying to make "Internet Explorer" a verb like they did with Bing. It was laughable when TV shows started inserting lines like, "So I tried to Bing that thing you told me about online..."

The last thing I need to see is someone saying "Let me see if I can Internet Explore that."

I know I already posted about this but...^^  This.

At our company, we don't have a "standard" browser.  Technically we don't really support Chrome or Firefox but anyone can still any browser that they want to (all users are local admins still; thanks old software! :( ).  So the finance/accounting depts have to keep IE at version 9 because anything higher and it doesn't work with their software/etc.

Some of the newer stuff that we are rolling out doesn't work properly in IE 9, so we've told them to install/use Chrome and/or Firefox.

I personally hate Chrome and used to use Firefox almost exclusively but now that Firefox is just demanding to look and be like Chrome, I dumped it in favor of Pale Moon.  So far, no issues with PM.  :)

All I know is whenever I see the word Bing pop up on my PC, the first thing I do is figure out how to disable what caused it.  I just like using Google for searching and the way they say Bing in the commercials for it makes me cringe.

This is a real Bing

I recommend IE.

Most of the people who have complaints about it are just jumping on the bashing bandwagon, or are completely technically inept.

Myself, I dumped IE way back in the Windows 98/2000 days and haven't really looked back.  I first moved to Firefox, then Chrome...Now I use a combination of Opera, Firefox, and Chrome.  I do day to day browsing on Opera, Firefox is used for porn, and Chrome just in case something doesn't work with Opera; but recently, Opera has been based on Chrome's engine, so I've only been using Chrome on my Linux box because Opera has some issues with the tabs....possible XFCE/Compositing desktop issue maybe, I dunno....but Opera all the way on Windows (other than porn...FF has good porn plugins).
